They are the plague! I catch them in my gill nets everyday and I stab them in the ribs and deep six them. They are causing more problems than the state wildlife biologist want to believe. Randy |

On the Il river the commercial guys are hauling them by the ton to markets that are paying from 7-12 cents a pound. There is talk of building processing plants along the river at four different towns to grind them into dog food and fish patties to feed inmates. If they go through with that, everyone I know will be fishing for the bastards. Anybody ever eat one? I'd rather lick a cats arse myself. |

Whats the water look like where they are. Is it clear or muddy? If it's clear, they would make good bow targets. |

There is a guy in Pekin IL that makes his living taking people on guided bowfishing trips shooting them as they jump. I think he has a web page. Bracket outdoors. |

They are a plague. The deep vibrating sounds of a mudmotor drives them crazy and they jump as high as 7 feet above the water. They mostly hang downstream of wing dikes and shallow waters, but they show up in the barge channel too. Muddy to semi-muddy water all seems the same to them. Have had 26 of em' (in 1 hour) jump into the boat and I've been hit by a few in the head when steering. They are super slimy and they bleed out when they crash the deck. They are suspected in the deaths of at least 2 guys in jon boats, the boats were found without a driver, running in circles. Locals think 1 guy was returning home from fishing and got hit so hard it knocked him out of the boat (no life jackets, so....). Anyways, they need to be cleaned 3 times. Scales, red vein out, then regular cleaning. Cleaning is the tough part! We smoke them over a bit of apple wood mixed with hickory. Then they taste excellent. Clean white, thick meat... not fishy, BUT they have some ninja star like bones that can get caught in your throat (so a boner is nice). The State of Illinois is seriously considering a subsidized bounty to get more commercial fishermen to harvest them. Here's a video taken in front of my house>> Ps>>. check out the bowfishing videos>>. |

I hope they start commercial fishing. Then Omega Protein will leave the bunker alone in the Bay. Then the Chesapeake will get healthier and the Rockfish will get fatter. |

If this here "economy" gets much worse, well hell, those damn jumping carp will start looking mighty tasty. If things get tough, and we get much poorer, we will be fighting over who gets to eat them. Folks from Thailand said those things are a super delicacy in the Orient. They use them in fish head soup and they love the meat . Expensive fish by their standards. BUT over here in the USA those fish are just too labor intensive to clean and process. Clean/prepare the bigger ones, as the smaller ones aren't worth the effort. Hope their good for Omega P, taking the pressure off your local native fish would be a winner for both parts of the USA. PSS>> two more good links>> and >>> how to = |

My m-i-l is from Thailand. If she finds out about those things, she will not let me in her house without one. I caught a hell of a nice Rockfish and cleaned it for her. Gutted, scaled, head and fins/tail cut off. Ready to cook. She said "NO HEAD?.....Ohhhh" ![]() ![]() Every Summer I bring her a cooler full of 3lb croakers. I am numba one son! |

I catch a ton everyday in my gill nets. I turn the river red with their blood. If we ever get a processing plant near me I will buy a new truck with the money. I am starting to think we can feed the poor and the world with them. There has to be some good come from them. Randy |
