Ok Gents.... Im looking at getting a fly fishing rod a reel soon. I don't which ones are worth it, I have looked at some at Cabela's website and jut don't know what a good brand is, I know G. Loomis is but what about Redington, etc....... I want a 2 piece 9' rod don't know what brand though. Im going to use it for saltwater redfishing in the shallows. Captain maybe you and Ben could chime in on this and help give some advice. |

dude.... u ain't never caught a redfish until u caught one on a flyrod. It's a freakin blast! I ain't no FE when it comes to da equipment though.... I know u can spend a small fortune on a setup if u want to. I also know dat u don't need to spend dat kinda $$$ to catch fish... because I didn't. One thing dat is most important is ur drag. Make sure u get a reel with a good drag. I don't even remember what brand my gear is, never even took it out da case last yr. Da reel is some Jap soundin name and da rod I don't remember..... but I spent about $200 and have no complaints. Now I'm gettin all fired up again and wanna go catch me some more like dat! Jon, get dat damn boat re-wired!!!!!! ![]() |

See I don't even know that much... I got some Cabela's points and was looking at some of their products. Guess I'm just going to have to take a ride up there and look at what they have in stock. Ben, last year when you me and Capt. talked about fly fishing reds is what got me back on the kick and since i got some extra gift certificates and so on I'm looking hard now. so a 9-10 weight would be the best set up for reds, kinda also want to use it for some bass later on too. So how do you look at the drag, weight, etc???? |

Ben - I'm heading down there this weekend to get the boat. Gonna hammer down on the reds while I'm there, too. Getting the boat rewired is going to become a priority. As for the rod weight, I think that a 10 wt is waaaay too heavy for inshore redfish. Hell, I boated a 180 pound tarpon on an 11 weight in Islamorada. I started out on them with a 6 weight with no drag on the reel. Yeah, it was a struggle at times, but I have since switched over to an 8 weight matched to a reel with drag. Much better now. The 8 wt. allows you to throw the heavier spoon flies into the constant Louisiana winds better, too. As for brands, spend what you are comfortable with. They come in all price ranges to suit all levels. My suggestion would be to find an affordable outfit to make sure that you enjoy the fishing style and then upgrade from there based on your conditions and desire. |

Jon's right.... it's tough enough to cast with my 8-9 weight. I didn't consider that.... it would really be a bitch with a 10. |
