Post subject:  Last year's fish story

This post is going to be long, but it is pretty funny.

A guy from work told me he knew where we could go to catch some walleye and trout by the dam not far from where we live. Now I am new to trout/walleye fishing. The river below the dam is very shallow and has a rock bottom. Well we had been getting alot of rain and the river had been up quite higher than normal, so I said OK lets go.

Well he told me that he wanted to fish right up by the dam, and since it was a rainy thursday night, I said OK. We get down there and the water is up and running pretty good. I put out the trolling motor, but the battery was too weak to fight the current. I cranked the PD and went upstream about 50 yards from the dam. We tied the boat off and fished from the bank for a little bit until a big thunderstorm rolled in. We took cover under a small cliff in the side of the mountain, and when the heavy rain had passed went back to the boat. Well at this dam, they generate electricity. I guess during the storm they decided to quit generating, because the water had dropped and now only about 6 inches of the boat remained in the water.

I had to wade out there (water a nice 37 degrees) and pull the boat back into the water (more work than I bargained for). My hands were so cold that I could barely move them, and I had to tie on a new lure. Since they weren't generating the current was pretty much gone, so my friend got the trolling motor back out. I was trying to get my lure tied on, and it took forever cause i couldn't feel my fingers. When I finally got it tied on, I looked up and we were only about 50 feet from the dam. There is a big wall at that place where on the dam side it was very deep and on the river side, it was pretty shallow. We went over the wall and started fishing. We didn't catch anything for a little while, and I said OK if you don't catch anything on this cast then we got to go some where else. Well he caught a 18 inch Rainbow Trout. So now we had to stay there. Well then he started catching trout like crazy and I caught 2 really nice walleye. It was getting dark and something hits my lure about 3 feet from the boat and nearly takes the pole out of my hand. We are using 4lb ultra light tackle. I tell him that I don't know what I had but it was something BIG. I make my way to the front of the boat, and he uses the trolling motor to keep the boat inbetween the fish and the concrete pillers. Well the battery finally gave in but not untill we had a good bit of momentum heading right to the wall of the dam. I had to push the boat away from the wall while fighting this fish!! After fighting the fish for a while, I finally get it in and it is a 27 inch Striper.

Well we fished a little while longer till it was dark and then decided to call it a night. Well remember the wall that I talked about earlier?? Now the water is too shallow to go over it. So we had to get out in the freezing water and drag the boat over the wall. Then I go to crank the PD up, and the starter had gone out. We finally make our way back to the boat ramp and realize that the water is too shallow. The boards on the trailor don't even touch the water.

How am I going to call in to work the next day and tell them that I am stuck at the river??
That is the question that kept running through my head. Well, I was able to winch it up onto the trailor, and go home. This was one of the best and worst fishing trips all rolled into one.
