Post Fly Fishing
Anyone fly fish for reds? What are some of the better flies? Just bought all the equipment and looking to get started. Do most people only sight cast for them or do they have luck fishing oyster reefs and such where they are not tailing?

I do - and I use Waldner spoon flys mostly. They will hit on just about anything when they are acting right, though. Poppers & spoon flys seem to work best where I fish due to all of the grass.

I mostly sight cast to them because I would wear myself out whipping that rod all day just blind casting. If conditions don't allow for full-on sight fishing, then just hit the spots where you know there should be some fish -- points, cuts, etc. In this case, I would say that yes, you should be able to catch them on the oysters and I would certainly not hesitate or wait for a tail to cast there.

You are gonna love it!

I bought a 18 piece Deceiver kit and about 30 other assorted flies and poppers. My rod is a 8weight with 8wf fly line, is this sufficient? Also anywhere you recommend to get those spoons from? Looking to get going in the right direction.

You will be happy with the 8 wt. on inshore reds. That's what I use, too.

I get my spoon flys directly from Capt. Rich Waldner. You can contact him through his website at www.fishwithrich.com. He is a super nice guy and will help you with the right selections for the waters you fish (he has crab & shrimp patterns, too).
