 Fish Farming in the Gulf
Federal agency approves plan for Gulf of Mexico fish farming Posted by Associated Press September 03, 2009 2:36 PM NEW ORLEANS -- President Barack Obama's administration has approved a plan to farm fish in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declined to oppose the plans despite objections from fishermen and environmentalists. They are concerned that growing fish in large cages or pens in the open waters will lead to pollution and threaten wild marine stocks. Proponents say offshore aquaculture is a safe way to produce high-quality seafood for American consumers. At the same time, the agency said it would develop a national policy for "sustainable marine aquaculture" in the next few months

I don't think that there is enough known about this to form an oppinion one way or the other, I do however find it very disheartening to hear that our federal government is going to unilaterally allow this practice without a bunch more research being done.

Re: Fish Farming in the Gulf
Everything I have read about this from people in the fishing industry has been negative, it all seems as though market value will decrease, genetics of the species will change with this type of containment, and the spreading of diseases will be a lot more likely.
I think it one of those things where you just need to rely on mother nature, not some democrats in Washington DC!

Re: Fish Farming in the Gulf
Bad. We were in Ireland a few years back salmon fishing. My father in law has a lodge over there and grew up fishing there. Their commercial fishing depleted the wild salmon stocks so they came up with the idea of pen raising salmon and sea trout in the bays off the coast. The concept was that the salmon would go to market and commercial catch would drop and the wild salmon stocks would rebound. Well, the trawlers still fish and the pen fish pollute the bays with tons of waste. Also some diseased fish have gotten out of the pens and into the rivers with the wild fish.
Feed the Bigheads to the Burrheads,...problem solved.

Re: Fish Farming in the Gulf
One more thing to think about is the fact that WHEN not if one of them big storms comes into the gulf, and tears down them boys farms they are going to be lookin w/ there hands out to the Gov the give um some of that Disaster relief monies to fix the problems. All there fish will be swimmin w/ the locals and screwin up our natural crop. Maby I'm wrong...
