Cook some bacon in it and then clean it with stainless steel wool.

You don't get it quite hot enough just cooking bacon. Need to get it pretty got to season it well.

We always put oil in it and throw it in the oven on about 450 for a hour or so. Or throw it in a fire.

Bacon will work but its not the best. I use crisco it Pam on a couple different.heat stages in the oven. A quick way is to put some oil in it and cook a big pan of cornbread.

Once clean as in Gray metal left. I coat my pots with shortening or Lard. I then put the pot upside down on my grill and let it get about 500* and let it get HOT. It will smoke like a train, but it is leaving the carbon on the pot that will season it. If you want it blacker do it again.
When you clean the pot use clean water only, dry pot completely and then coat it lightly with Shortening for storage.

This is good advice. I did mine in the oven this way, but outside would be better.

My gripe is that my season wasn't uniform at first. I had bald spots in the pan etc. I think it's because the new lodge pans aren't as nice as the old stuff. Through a bunch of uses the season in my pan evened out a lot.

I tried. My pan kept growing mold. So I threw it out in the garage
I've heard they're better if you take it and have the inside smoothed out and polished at a machine shop.

We put pot coated with lard on an open wood fire and burn the hell out of it. Use cheap mop to keep coating it with oil each time the prior coat burns out.

Just wash with hot water--NO soap. Dry with paper towel. Heat back up on stove to evaporate all water and wipe down with vegetable oil while still warm.

If you have to re-season then do as others have said with pan upsidedown in oven.

I use a crawfish burner and a BBQ mop with lard. Get it super hot and mop the lard all over it. Will smoke like crazy then let it cool down. It should be black and shiny when you finish

I told you the quick way now I'll tell you the good way since I have time to type.
Heat the oven to 225* and put the skillet in for 15 minutes.
Pull the pan out and rub a liberal amount of lard or oil in it and wipe I back out. While your doing this step heat the oven to 325.
Put the skillet back in upside down for 15 minutes.
When you're at the 15 minute mark turn turn the oven to 425, pull the pan out and wipe out again. Don't add any more lard.
Put the skillet back in upside down foe 2 hours then turn the oven off and let it cool natural. You can do this up to 4-5 times and it will be a great season that's hard to get off.
Also you can strip your old seasoning off with heavy duty oven cleaner or soaking it in lye. I do several pieces of iron this way a week and having had a problem yet.

I don't cook in some for 6 months and never had mold.

Do you heat them up after use?

You don't want to leave too thick of a coat on it for storage. Just enough to give a deep shine. I used lard to originally season the pan but now I just use olive oil after drying it. Just put a small amount (size of a quarter) and rub the whole pot down with a paper towel. Throw it back on the burner for a few minutes then shut it off and let it cool. No issues with mold or smell.

Try seasoning the same way BayouBuster stated, but with falxseed oil. It comes out slicker than cat shit and makes a hard finish. When you dry your pot on the stove after cleaning, make sure to not put the lid on too tight, or don't forget about it if you do..... I split my favorite pot right down the center doing that.

I was at Dick's Sporting Goods at the end of this past duck season. First time is ever been to one but I had received a gift card so I went and looked around. I found two large 14" Lodge skillets for $20 each! I was tickled to death! These are the first NEW pieces of cast iron cookware that I've bought. I seasoned them on the grill and they've been great.
