My kids were doing a report on all their VFW relatives (my dad and two uncles fought in WWII and my uncle on my mom's side fought in Vietnam). In asking for any history, my brother had my dad's journal all these years. Lots of stories I never heard--my dad went in right when he turned 18, went to New Guinea, Philippines and Japan. 29 months straight (1943-1946)! No rotation. Came out just a few months shy of 21. All the while his brothers fought in North Africa, D-Day+2, the Battle of the Bulge. Had no idea at Leyte, his ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo on Christmas day which failed to detonate.

One entry, there's an acronym "CM3e". Anyone know what that stands for? The context is in the Phillipines he met a friend of his from Philadelphia (who was a nose gunner on a B-24) and got ahold of some type of alcohol--it sounds like they were hung over.

It's a great program their school does for Veteran's Day every year. They put together a slide show with pictures of their relatives (my kids did have the most by far) and play it in the background while they have speakers and the band plays. My son was picked to play Taps on the trumpet which, after going to my relatives' funerals, makes me tear up big time. Only my uncle that fought in N Africa is still alive (almost 100).

Last year they had two Medal of Honor recipients speak to the middle school.

My dad only ever told me limited stories so this was pretty amazing reading this. I can't imagine my grandmother sending all three sons to every corner of the earth at the same time for years!

I’m thinking quartermaster 3 rd class , either an e-4 or e-5 essentially a corporal or Sgt rank. And I was stationed in the philliphines for two years as a marine. They also have a clear moonshine the put a beef leg in when the leg turns purple it’s ready . Potent stuff

Just got done reading Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed" about his time in Peleliu and Okinawa. Unreal that he had dates and places my dad was at just days earlier. The even mention the same Bob Hope show!
