Post Another type of mod
I had some problems with hairline cracks on my transom plate. Didn't make into the transom itself but I reinforced the welds and put some additional bracing to make sure it doesn't spread. i also had a transom saver fabricated for trailering. My question is for anyone that uses a transom saver. Does it put too much pressure on the motor (the hydraulics or 1/2 moon thing you flip down to lock in the motor. Here are some pics and a video of my concern- you will see it flex. I just want to be sure that I'm not damaging the motor in my effort to protect the transom. Obviously, in the video- when the motor goes down it will rest on the transom saver and put the pressure on the 1/2 moon thing- with the trailer straps, the hydraulic creates a lot of pressure.

Thanks!

I run a strap from the grab handle plate down to one of the stringers inside the boat. It actually will take all the pressure off the hydro cylinder and with no straps on the lower unit there is no pressure on it either. Which has been a concern in the past of causing seal leaks.

Peck told me to trim it all the way up then bump it down a hair to relieve the pressure off the line.

Maybe so but driving down LA roads and seeing my motor flopping around makes me believe that sooner or later something will give. 5 seconds to put on the strap and no bouncing is worth my time and piece of mind.

I don't have the hydro-trim, but what I do for longer runs is run a strap from handle to handle on the boat across the swivel assy with a little tension and then tie the trim wheel so it can't rotate, this prevents it from lowering the motor. If you crank down on the tension screw on the trim it will eventually bugger up the threads. 6000 miles with no issues doing it this way.

I am waiting for somebody to come up with a good solution to this. I also have wondered how much stress it puts on the hyrdo cylinder during trailering while it is bouncing. The best thing I heard was to put one of those rubber dockside protectors under the motor then trim down on top of it and strap it down. That would relieve the stress on the hydro...

I use two straps now. One across the back of boat to prevent the motor from bouncing, and one across the front to prevent the motor from turning side to side. I have seen a few transom savers modified and a hole drilled in the skeg, and that looks like a good option but I have not tried that.
