 Fess up
Ok, I see all the vids of runnin thru the tall grass and pads and lillys. Has anyone hit any stumps or logs. Would love to try it but just about the time I get on step, a stump passes right by the boat.

i use to punish the stumps with my bb longtail but with the aluminum frame on the gator tail im still a bit leery to hit anything at decent speeds.

 Re: Fess up
A couple times. Hit hard enough once that the boat jumped out the water, dog flew out the boat and I almost went with him. Hit a stump about 2' diameter hidden in tall lilly pads runnin WFO. Got a nice little hook to remember it by. Thats the day the dog decided he was to old and stopped riding on the bow. He now wants to stay in the back by me.

Stumps are a fact of mudmotor life.

 Re: Fess up
Our stumps must not be anhcored too well. I thought I knew where they were but every once in a while, one will creep over and jump under the skeg. I get a hoot out of taking someone new out hunting and hitting a stump at WOT. One dude was clutching his PFD like he was a goner.

 Re: Fess up
pretty lucky a WOT with the stumps most of our stumps are just under the water. My problem is taking off if i hit one at WOT the motor just kicks up but taking off and hit one it makes a hell of a noise and jerks the handle loose.

 Re: Fess up
I remember the first stump I hit WFO with the SD. I had always had regular out drives before. This was a whole new world. I hit that stump just under the water and just about Chit my self.

 Re: Fess up
I've cracked transoms, broke the transom clamp mount bolts on mudmotors, and removed lower units/cracked the tower on outboards in the water I run. There is a stumpfield about 250 yards from the launch that one has to go through in order to get to the good hunting/fishing areas here, over the years the ice has pushed a lot of them out so it is getting better.

 Re: Fess up
Stumps aint nuttin for MM's I hit one @ WOT so hard that the motor kicked up; handle went all the way to the floor, but got a chunk of skin and knotted my left shin up pretty. The motor was fine, but it killed my buzz!! Also, that pretty alum. rock guard that GT offers, well lets just say I wrapped it backwards 180 deg. and gave it to GT for a demo souvenir No probs with my motor or skeg, just character knicks

 Re: Fess up
Its not so much the motor hitting, its the bow either hitting solid on a stump stickin 2 foot out of the water but hidden by the grass or pads. That would have to be a sudden stop or at best a short air ride. And it would have to hurt.

 Re: Fess up
I run texaco canals in lafitte and there is more old pipes (I think whole rigs) in there than anywhere else I have been. I hit one and I thought I took the lower unit off my prodrive but only a small ding. I think if the MM can handle that, they can handle any stump.

Hit them so hard it's made my molars hurt. Also hit sumberged docks, logs, pipes, concrete pilings, and even an old sunken barge that I didn't know what it was til I looked on a satellite picture after I got home.

Hit a 55 gallon drum filled with cement once. Was not running WTF open so I got hung on top. Almost sent me and passenger out even though I was only moving around 5 mph. Left a nasty welt for about 2 weeks on the shin though.

Be sure and keep your elbow bent so it dont rip your arm out of socket!! Whats even worse is to hit a big old stump while in a full blown power slide.

 Re: Fess up
went make a ride in saline-larto this weekend in some shallow swamps filled with alot of cypress knees. Wasnt WOT but running just fast enough to stay on step and hit a mine field. They were everywhere every time i hit the troddle it would jump out of my hand. Trimmed it all the way up and idled out real slow. Never could get back on step without hitting one
