Post Making a surface drive mud motor?
Im going to build a surface drive mud motor and need some input!
I have a 24hp onan, already have the shaft figured out, just need some help on the belt system.
Clutch or no clutch? Belt or chain. I was wanting to use a centrifigual clutch with a timing belt type belt, but I am having a hard time finding a clutch thats rated for that size of a motor. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Comet had CVT rated for that Hp. But Comet is out of business. I think you meaning a centrifugal clutch with a notched v-belt. The v-belt works, Orion mud motors use this setup. I have a Comet 94c clutch for 1 1/8inch shaft, also the driven pulley and belt. I would sell it for cheap. If you was to buy electric clutch, timing gears, timing belt, material to fabricate, propeller, and etc.......Your savings will not be as great as you imagine, compared to just buying a prefab frame. If you want to experiment with CVT drive, let me know if you want to buy the CVT drive setup I have.

I was talking about a centrifugal clutch and the notched belt. I am very interested in your setup. Let me measure the shaft on my engine and make sure it will fit. How much do ya want? Thanks for the help!

Rather be huntin.....you going off of a motor that you have seen up close or pics off of the net? THinking of building one myself and Not sure where the best place to start is . I am up in Norhtern MN near the Canadian border. Never see a mud motor up this far rarely in the center of the state even so I really have nothing to compare it to.
