Post Scholarships
I am a Louisiana senior preparing to graduate and head off to college in the fall. I was wondering if anybody knows about any scholarships that their company may have, or any scholarship I could apply for. I enjoy hunting and fishing as much as any body, and I currently run a 36hp pro-drive pushing a 18x54 Uncle J boat. I appreciate any help.

I have a TOPs reward, but it only pays tuition. I am just looking to see if I can get another to keep my college cost as small as I can

I'd say the 36 hp Prodrive and Uncle J hull. This should be your first funding avenue. Sell it now to pay your expenses and leave the scholarships to the kids who really need them.

Ha I understand what you are saying bout the boat, but I couldn't let that thing go. The scholarships are to just help out a little with the cost, so I'm not looking for a big one. I wouldn't want to take anything big away from someone who needed it more.

Ha it's more of my dad's boat actually, but lets me hunt, fish and bowfish out of it. He told me as long as I take care of it and basically bring him where ever he wants when he wants to go I can use it.

Thanks VooDoo I appreciate the information. The ROTC program still exists and I have a few friends that are doing it. I plan out doing a major to deal with wetland sciences or something of that matter. I don't really know what I'll do for a future just yet, but the outdoors will sure be apart of it. The thought of trying to guide if I got the chance has also occurred to me. Thanks again

Both of my girls got a big chunk of change for college because the area we live in is poor. Not sure of what the scholarship was called. The money is allocated to areas high in poverty. The county I live in has a median income of 60k however the small town I'm from has a median income of 11k. They also got Governors scholarships. Both had high GPA's in HS and that helped getting some funds for college. No matter how much they received it was not enough for Ol dad. I'm footing the tab for under grad. The Law school is not on my tab.
There is a lot of money out there. Good luck.

I'd consider tech school and working a trade. It all depends on what you'd like to do for the next 40 years.

I am going to LSU to major in wetland science. I've heard of people going to alumni building,so I will be doing that too. As for the trade school I plan on doing some classes like that during the summer because I spent a couple of weeks working at a machine shop and I enjoyed doing that kind of work.

Post Re: Scholarships
Have you researched that degree and what common starting salaries are?

I agree that doing what you love is important but look at the cost of college and how long it will take to pay off.

I always found it humorous people spending 4-5 years in college and then being shocked that degree will take 20 years to pay off. Ie education, general studies, etc.

You can always change your mind when you get into college but remember it will cost you one unrecoverable year of salary for ever additional year of school.

Whatever you do STAY AWAY from student loans skip a year of college work offshore and go back. Don't start your life behind a eight ball.

I like the idea that you are wanting to add machinist to your skills. I bet you will always be able to find a job that pays wages enough to feed your family and pay the house note. So many go to college and make nothing when they get out if they find a job.

I bet wetland science would be fun. If you can be outside in the wetlands a lot.

I hate to rain on your parade but if my kid told me he was going to school for wetland science I would kick him in the ass. I graduated college with a wildlife management degree I could still kick myself in the ass for that. Should have listened to my parents. After working for the state for a year unable to pay my bills my dad told me to get my ass home he had a job for me. A week later I was offshore. Don't get me wrong if I did not have a degree I would not be where I'm at.
Do yourself a favor
Look into some kind of engernering or petro science degree.
Any major oil company would hire you as soon as you graduate and the money they are offering is ridiculous.

Nursing, engineering, emergency management, etc. Degrees that have career paths. Take it from someone with a poly sci and social studies degree, find a degree with use. You can play in the wetlands or play biologist on your off days, no need to do it 8-5.

Oh ag business and ag economics ain't too bad if you have to be around animals or in that field. That is a boom right now.

If I were you I would look into Environmental Science instead. You can start with DEQ as an Environmental Scientist 1 and work your way up to a Environmental Scientist 3 if you desire. They max out somewhere around 75 k. You put into state retirement and retire at 30 years and get somewhere around 75% of your salary for life. Or work 40 and get 100%. These are rough figures. They do anything from permitting, to enforcement, to field work.

If you decide not to stay with them you would've made many connections. If you move on you can't get jobs in any of the related fields

Do like my girls did. Get their Dad to pay for their college. He is/was my deal. Both girls signed a contract that I drew up at my kitchen table. It reads as follows. I will go to college, get good grades[A or B] and graduate. Upon graduation I will present my degree to my father. Upon inspection of said degree father will assume all loans that accumulated to get said degree. However should daughter decide to quit college, get married, have babies, flunk out, join the Hells Angels or whatever all loans accumulated will be paid by daughter. All loans after under grad is the responsibility of daughter. Both girls signed the contract.
My oldest cost me 63,000 dollars for five years of college. Double major, double minor. She is now wrapping up her second year of Law School. Her emphasis in law school is Intellectual Property
My youngest is racking up the tab right now to be a Radiologist.
I am busting my ass with my job in LEO and owning a Fishing Business. My wife owns Licensed Day Care and the fishing business. We think its worth it.

Go ag or engineering. I graduated last year with ag business and a minor in espanol and an emphasis in international ag at 27. Took a whole 8yrs off and on of school to get it though. Paid cash for every semester. Have 0 debt for school loans. Bought a house, boats - on my 5th boat(took a couple years to build up to the 10k), four wheeler, two motorcycles, two trucks, and have money in the bank. I worked my fucking dick in the dirt. But I paid what I needed to. When money got tight, I put in overtime. When money got real tight, I went to oilfield. I went to a well off high school, where most students didn't pay for shit. My best friend makes 36 before taxes and never has money to do anything and he has an Economics degree from Baylor. My other friend went to petro engineering at a&m, graduated in 3.5 yrs and started at 97k with EVERYTHING paid for (truck/lodging/bills). Now makes 150. But I spend his money more often than he does.

Not sure what my point is. I bring home 50now, and I'm in my own bed every night. But it's just me. And I'm happy. I've had a dozen jobs, and have learned a lot. Also learned not to feel locked in. 100k/yr wasn't worth 28 days a month on call 24/7, but it damn sure paid for school and some toys.

Work your ass off and quit looking for a handout. Bitch.

Jk. Good luck. It's life. Don't take it so seriously.

Find out who in your department is getting a lot of scholarships and ask them who is writing their scholarship applications. Then bribe them to write yours.

Scholarship applications are just like resumes they get you through the initial selection to the personal interviews.

Hadabuddyof mine that always got scholarships and I didn't. I found out his gf was writing his. Got her writing mine as well and ended up batting around 500 on getting applied for scholarships.

Post Re: Scholarships
Your college of choice should have a "blanket" scholarship app each year. Also check within your major (department). While in school I received one from the university itself, and then a separate one from my field of study.
You will be in college...live accordingly..trust me. Student loans are a bitch. I was lucky and graduated undergrad owing nothing. Pursued a doctorate degree...I didn't live cheap as some, but I didn't live as high on the hog as others.... 1/4 of my paycheck I never see....

I would strongly consider another field besides wetland science. My old roommate majored in a similar field. He worked 40/50 hrs a week to put himself through school and then took 15/16 hrs of classes. Had a descent gpa; 3 something. Midway through second year his advisors told him he wouldn't be competative unless he had a 3.9. If your going to spend four years in school you need to major in a field that pays more than 35k a year...
