Yes, I've run seas that big and bigger. The part I was calling bullshit on was anyone running them in a mud boat.

Ok, this ain't right.

You get dragged down until the waders fill with water? Doesn't air float?

I wear a wader belt. Keeps the air in the waders and slows down the water coming in. It's a good deal. You seriously need to try it, do it in a pool if you don't believe me. You have to swim until you can stand up though, your bottom half will float a hell of a lot better than your top half.

Got a buddy that's a basshole, (he's not ALL bad) , didn't wear his lanyard had a little incident and now gets twice the use out of any pair of socks if you follow me. Made a believer out of me but I still hate wearing that thing.

What if you're knocked unconscious. You can't breathe through your feet you know. Thats when a pfd comes in handy.

In fact 2 people I know had an accident last month with no waders on. One didn't make it and one did. The survivor had a pfd. The other didn't.

You are absolutely correct about the pfd. You are also right that if you aren't swimming, they gonna find your body by seeing the sole of your boots floating at the surface. I have started to wear a pfd when running to hunting spots. It's not easy. I hate it. But you are correct that it will save your life. Besides, I'm in my late fourties so
I don't last as long as I used to. Swimming that is.

My point is that you don't sink from wearing waders.

Maybe not in a swimming pool, but go try swimming in them in river current with no bottom in sight.

x 1000000000 on the PFD!

Thanks for all the answers.

It would seem to me that if you were tossed out while in your waders and the water starts pouring in, once filled up, it would seem to me that they would not pull you down any further than the water level in the waders. LOL, not sure water is going to pass through, mine are getting tight. Now, you probably aint gonna pull yourself up anywhere, but you may be able to walk out with them.

So am I right that they will only fill up to the top of the wader and they will not pull you down because the water will equalize?

You're right but u can't swim with them on. So bottom line if u insist on wearing waders in a boat make sure u wear a pfd.

I was always taught as a kid, wearing waders and hip boots while running a boat = death. I really don't know anyone who does this.

You won't get lacross ankle tights off under water before you drown. IMHO

You can swim in waders. In fact, you better PLAN on swimming in waders. Keep reading to find out why. They won't pull you down. They might tip your butt up until they completely fill. I like that personally because I don't swim for shit. Wear a wader belt, wear it tight. I suggest that if you are nervous about it, and you believe the old wives tale about waders dragging you down, try it somewhere where there is no current and you can get up like a pool. If you try it, what you will find out is that THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU WILL HAVE IS GETTING YOUR FEET UNDER YOU BECAUSE THE WADERS ARE FULL OF AIR. IT WILL BE HARD TO MAKE YOUR LOWER HALF GO DOWN, BECOUSE YOUR LOWER HALF IS BOYANT. DONT PANIC. SWIM. Coot, I personally have done all my wader swimming in the Mississippi in 40 degree water. No current or deep water there, wth do I know. Keep your effing waders on for the swim. The water eventually warms up in the waders. once you get out of the water up here you will want to try not to die of hypothermia unless you hunt in a state that borders the gulf of effing Mexico. I really like the cabelas ice buster waders and always keep dry pants and dry felt liners under the deck of my boat for when I decide to swim in the decoys. You swap all the wet for dry out , fire up the heater and keep hunting in air temps of 15-20 degrees. Wear wool. It dries quickly.

Up here, where it really does get cold, NOONE wears tennis shoes to the blind, EVERYONE wears waders. Jeez, you'd be frozen before you get there.

Type one PDF that rolls you face up sounds good to me.

Only time I can ever see the need to kick waders off is if you were trying to climb back in boat with waders full of water. Water that isn't in water is heavy. THAT IS WHY YOU WEAR A WADER BELT. IT KEEPS THE WATER OUT OF YOUR GOTDAYUM WADERS FOR A SURPRISINGLY LONG TIME AND YOU FLOAT. The idea is to get out of the water with your lower half as dry as possible. A true wader belt has a big 'old quick release buckle for those rare moments you want to get rid of the waders. Never done it myself but if that moment comes I want to be able to do it quick even if I'm exhausted. That's why you buy a wader belt not some spare belt with a metal buckle on it you have laying around.

Now both of my grandpas were dead before I was born. I had to figure a lot of stuff out for myself. Maybe you should try to figure some stuff out on your own instead of taking what grandpa heard sitting on a barstool in 1962 as gospel. Seriously, I have been in the cold water in waders on many, many occasions and I can tell by reading this most of you never have. I seriously think that if you spend a lot of time in waders you better know what is going to happen when you take that unexpected recreational swim. If you panic and try to get out of them because you think you are going to drown because of them, you might be in trouble. Try it. It might save your life. At least you'll know what to expect instead of believing these false legends.

Glad u mastered swimming in waders. Maybe you should try and master staying out of the water in waders. How many times have actually had to swim in waders? Are you falling out the boat, sinking the boat, or just clumsy and can't stand up?

How many times? Don't know. More than 5, less than 10. I'm 46 been wearing waders since age 12 or 13. Flopped around in 3 feet of water but usually happens when you are at least waist deep. Usually in a spot with hard bottom where you think it isn't going to happen. Usually has something to do with a submerged log snagging your foot or it's greasy on an angle and your foot goes out from under you and you can't catch yourself.

Used to trap a lot too. Lots of dragging a boat around sharp drop offs, beaver and muskrat runs. Also hunted around 30 days per year in areas that have hard bottom and stumps and current. Dragging a boat through stumps with a 30 mile an hour wind makes things happen. Easy to end up with your feet out from under you. Never fell out of a boat. Shit happens if you are out in it a lot.

I understand that the internet Duck Dynasty generation can just call the fire department from their cell phone when they get in trouble but some of us know what it is like to be cold, alone and in trouble. You can read my post an learn something or you can keep making comments about ankle tight lacrosse waders that proves to me you have no idea what you are talking about.

Not trying to be a tough guy, just want guys to think about this a little, maybe even try it out and see what it's like under safer conditions.

Every scenario you just described was in water you could stand in. I've dipped my waders before, and that's not the same as swimming...

Sometimes you gotta break eggs with hammers to make a point here at mmt. Sorry if I came off that way.

No harm done here. I can see why some people prefer to run with waders on, I just never will. Merry Christmas!

Make sure you test the switch from time to time.

At a little less than 5 hours I found mine was broken in 2 places and the piece that pulls off was stuck so fukkin solid that it broke the lanyard trying to get it off (lanyard was also a flimsy piece of shit)..... tested it and it still worked so I said fuck it and ran it like that (but with new paracord for a lanyard and some nevr-sieze on the button) because it looks like you have to replace the whole motherfucker all the way to the engine and 2 wire crimps. Went out yesterday and the piece of fukkin shit almost killed me. Pulled it and the motor is still going balls to the wall. Gonna call Copperhead when they open back up I guess.......

Is there something better than what they use? I really don't trust that flimsy piece of plastic junk shit. Looks like the cheapest made in china fukkin junk ever on the inside.

Yeah, that looks like a much better system. Also I can clip the existing wires at the original switch and crime on some blade terminals. Thanks Kibb

I wear my strap on my wrist the ole fashion way but sometimes I'll strap it to the back of my life jacket.
