St. Johns Sheriff office is needing shallow water rescue boats in Laplace. The flooding is like never before over there.

If my GDSD hadn't crapped out on me yesterday, I'd have been excited to come help them.

wheat-
I see there are many agencies involved in that laplace evac. Do they need more boats and if so where are they launching them? I-55 off ramp?

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
I just spoke with the dispatch @ the sheriff office. The sheriff has suspended the operations for volunteers for the night due to weather conditions and lack of light. He is only using experienced search and rescue for night operations if required. She told me the muster/command post is the parking lot of Home Depot on Airline. If you come from Baton Rouge you need to exit at the Gramercy exit and take airline into LaPlace.
She said they will be resuming operations in the morning at first light.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
Anyone left in Port Sulphur that needs a ride out if flooding occurs between the levees can use my dads boat if its still there. From what I gather that area hasn't flooded yet. It's a 21.5' Blazer Bay & is no stranger to hurricanes. It floated & survived Katrina & Rita in Empire 7 yrs ago. Dads on an Alaskan cruise w/ mom & I couldn't get off to get it out. It's just a boat. Got a lot of friends down there w/ everything on the line.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
Does anyone know this Jesse Shaffer Sr. or Jr. That have been making so many rescues around Plaquemine? The news said "They were rescuing residents that authorities were unable to get to." I'm just curious what they have that rescuers don't...

I know Jesse and his son. Not sure what they are using but I'm sure a part of it is because they are willing to take WAY more risks than a normal person.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
That was my guess Scott but didn't know them. Also knowledge of the area & being able to tell where they are w/ all the flood water could be part of it as well. Some folks can recognize there surroundings even when its flooded.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
Any more info on boats needed in Laplace? My wife is flooded in out there with some family. I NEED to get to her! She is almost 6 months pregnant. No power, running water, and 2 feed of water downstairs in her aunts house.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
I just spoke with the St. John the Baptist Command Center and still could not get confirmation if they need more volunteers. There are still ongoing evacuation operations throughout the night. She told me to call back first thing in the a.m. LDWF has approximately 50 boats involved and they estimate that 1500 people still need evacuating. I am just going to show up in the morning and if they need me then I'll help. If they do not then no harm done.

 Re: Isaac - Storm Thread
Thanks Barnes. I'll be heading that way too. Debating on pulling the boat or not. Boat is fully fueled. Truck, not so much. Poor planning on my part I know.
Not really familiar with the area. Only been to the house once. So hopefully I'll be able to get more info in the morning.
