Looks like paracord, I wrapped mine too. Good grip, cheap, and allot warmer in winter on hands and gloves

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Argo, it was one of the first ones shipped. I've had my order in since October, but (unlike some others) they didn't want my money until they had the blocks in. KP shipped it the day after he got my check, and I had it the next day. WhoDat, go for it! Duckhunter, that's 3/8" camo nylon rope. It was actually Swampnuts anchor line until he broke it trying to pull me off a mud flat. I ended up with the longer piece! I wrapped it the same way you do a fighting chair, and it makes for a perfect grip where your fingers fall between the half hitches. Dguidry, the spark plugs are snug, damn you!

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Questions on EFI in general
1. Can you still modify an EFI motor. Heads, valves, exhaust etc ? 2. How advanced is an EFI lawn mover engine. Does the EFI have a chip or ECU ? 3. Does it just replace the float and inject directly into the throttle body based on rpms ? 4. Can you advance the rpms ?
Thank you

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
So now that GatorTail has sent out Christmas cards advertising the 37EFI, when can we expect to hear from them or anyone else regarding the 37? I've seen pictures of it on a Backwater LT. Mudbuddy has been silent about it.
How long has anyone been testing it, if at all? Nothing on their website. It's not even on the Briggs site. I would think a large company like Briggs would have had a product launch.
Nothing. From anyone. Other than a photo and a postcard.
Odd.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
I'm pretty sure they all where testing them out over the last year. I know beavertail up here in Minnesota was running one for most of the summer. MOST mud motor companies don't talk about or advertise anything new until it's ready for release.

I thought the 37EFI was simply the old 35 but with EFI.

That's all it is. ProDrive tested one for about a year before Briggs put them into production.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
So coot, why did you opt for the Briggs Efi instead of the pd aftermarket Efi pd had out for a while now?

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Of course there is a cost difference, and the only reason you'd be willing to pay it would be if you intended to mod the motor and wanted to be able to tune it.
As far as warranty is concerned, PD is still offering the full 3 year warranty on motors they've installed their aftermarket EFI systems on.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
I think coot ordered a brand new motor with factory EFI. I am pretty sure ordering factory EFI is only 500 bucks more and bolt on EFI much more than that

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
I called to order a new engine with PD EFI, and KP talked me into waiting for the Briggs EFI instead. He said they were seeing roughly the same performance gains, and I could still mod it later if I needed to. It was nice saving $1400 right off the bat, but I had the money and had made my mind up to spend it when I called him. That being said, the main reason I went with Briggs EFI is warranty. Even though I'd still be covered by both Briggs and PD warranty, as he explained, there is inherently some gray area. Instead, with Briggs EFI, any engine issue will absolutely be a Briggs issue and can be handled by any Briggs service center. He said that if I went with PD EFI, I wouldn't have to worry about not getting taken care of, it just might mean that I had to bring it to Loreauville if an issue in that "gray area" arose. Heads will still make it stronger, and an exhaust will still help it breathe a little better. With Gen III gears, a new prop design is the only thing that's going to make it noticeably faster...

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
With the pd efi system, prodrive will absorb the briggs warranty work, so yes, with the pd efi, warranty work will have to be done through a prodrive service center. There may be some exceptions...

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Gatortail also has the 37 motors. I was there this week and saw them in person. They were mounting one to a boat in the back! It looked sweet! They said it almost had the top end of a stage one. They said the bottom was not as strong but not enough to really worry about it. They had nothing but great things to say about it other than they don't have any way to sup up the programming.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Some of you guys are FUNNY. Do any of you own a vehicle you drive every day WITHOUT EFI??? I have a 20 year old truck that has EFI and when it sits outside in the winter for days without starting, it still fires right up in 10 degree (and sometimes colder) weather. It starts without having to mess with the choke or touch the accelerator pedal. I'm not a mechanic but know a few personally that tell me you can mod ANY EFI motor. Just have to have the correct computer equipment to remap it after doing so, and after doing so, it doesn't need to be messed with again unless you burn out a sensor. Take a look at a lot of drag strip cars and you'll see there are MANY of them that have EFI but they also have very expensive computer systems on board to run them. I'll bet that after mods you'll be able to have your lawn mower mud motor remapped for a small fee and it'll run just fine.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
I don't see remapping the software being a "small fee" considering the time and work it would take to do it. And at that rate how is hooking a pc up to your mud motor to start changing fuel rate in a giant spreadsheet any easier or better than tuning a mikuni? I'm not saying that efi is a bad thing by any means but I have a hard time believing that the briggs efi is what its cracked up to be.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Brigg's certified technicians will not be the ones remapping the ECU's on these engines. It will most likely be an aftermarket piggy back system to "cheat" the fuel system to correctly tune. Without having hands on one and seeing how complex the system is it's hard to say how difficult it will be to develop a tuner for them.
The good news is these engines will already come with sensors to support EFI, so a complete stand alone system will be easier and cheaper to develop using the factory sensors. That will be a long ways down the road I'm afraid.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
I'm just surprised that it took this long for ANYONE to come out with EFI on a lawn mower motor. After all, almost ALL the auto manufacturers perfected it DECADES AGO.
And how long have some of the boat motor manufacturers been offering it? I have a friend who has a Honda 4 stroke that I believe is several years old and it has EFI.
So to me, it's about time Briggs and Kohler stepped up and decided to do this. Like I said, those of us in cold climates will benefit from it.

 Re: 37 EFI vanguard??
Because their market hasn't been demanding it. EPA regs probably have more to do with it now, more than anything else. The MM market is shit compared to the lawn and garden/ power equipment market, and those guys likely couldn't give two fucks about the benefits of EFI.
