 Insurance questions
Ok guys a friend of mine is looking into getting a loan for getting a boat built by a shop like aucoin or breaux or hanko for example to put a pro drive on. He is trying to get his ducks n a row to make sure that its affordable to him. Being that its a loan he is required to have insurance. He was callin every insurance company in the phone book to get a quote and they all told him that they do not insure custom built boats, only manufactered ones. So..those of u who have custom built boats and home built boats who r u guys using to insure them?

 Re: Insurance questions
Progressive is good Word of advice though Get insurance coverage secured "BEFORE" you sink it. Works much better that way. I know.

 Re: Insurance questions
call at Farm Bureau office down there and ask for Chris Fakier. If he's got his auto insurance with us we can write an inland marine policy on it. If not they can write it through progressive or foremost. Office is in Thibodaux. the office number is 985-447-3870. Also he could try to get a boat loan through Farm Bureau Bank. He'll have to ask for Mandy Lagarde, shes the FSR over there.

 Re: Insurance questions
All you have to do is have a marine surveyor take a look at it and then write a report then you take it to your insurance aggency and will have the info they need to insure it. I used a guy out of Morgan City. Done this on my house boat and all my homemade boats. Will probably cost 100-200 bucks though.

 Re: Insurance questions
Progressive never questioned anything. I pay about 18.00 a month full coverage.

 Re: Insurance questions
I called progressive and they asked what the manufacterer is and when I explained it was a custom built aluminum boat they said they don't insure it

 Re: Insurance questions
My State Farm agent in BR wrote the policy for my Gatortail. Not sure if it's the same thing though, GT might be considered a manufacturer.
Basin, who did you get your houseboat insurance through? I'm having a hell of a time finding someone to write a policy on the one we are building.

 Re: Insurance questions
tell them that it is a Gator-Tail..Pro-Drive.. Aucoin's....etc. Dont tell them it is a custom hull. I work for Farm Bureau Insurance and that is how we get around that. This is how i wrote my IM policy on my boat

 Re: Insurance questions
State Farm insures my Brother Breaux skiff. Was open and upfront with them about everything and never had a problem.

Get REPLACEMENT clause - avoids hassles if totaled in first three years
Progressive wrote me a check for every penny including taxes and title fee when mine got hit by a car while trailering to the boat ramp

 Re: Insurance questions
To each his own, but financing a boat that isn't built yet is a slipery slop! Progressive here. Worth it's weight in GOLD! less than $20 a month.

 Re: Insurance questions
Thats probably the key. I just showed them the registration that said it was a Charles Leonard hull.
