Two models......999 cc.....interesting. I take it the Mercury Hydraulic Trim means the same package that Merc outboards use?

Spec. wise, the 35 Vangaurd And 40 Kohler are very close.

35 Vangaurd
cc's - 993
Bore - 86 mm
Stroke - 87 mm
Compression Ratio - 8.2-1

40 Kohler
cc's - 999
Bore - 90 mm
Stroke - 78 mm
Compression Ratio - 8.8-1

6 cc's is not a big difference.

I asked my GD man bout the 40 Kohler and his reply was that it had the hp alright but not the torque they wanted on the low end...

I would love to see a torque curve comparison to the 35 and 36 hps that are already the mainstay of the MM market.... If the power is all on the hi end of the rpm band - it won't fit the application of a MM...

No i tough myself that building engines. Particularly, 383 Stroker engines.
Hence the stroker part.

Ok,

My point was that your little offhanded trying to be sly statement didn't make much sense.

When in fact, when you shorten stroke or length, you reduce Torque.

Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transmitted.

Torque is a factor, but not the sole or single factor in the power equation.

Need any more physics lessons call me.

I keep my mouth shut in most of these engine related topics because unlike some, I know that I don't know enough to comment.

I'm sorry, I should have used the word torque in place of power.

And you are right, torque is not the single or sole factor in the power equation. Angular velocity is also used to formulate power when characterizing rotational systems.

Power put out by an engine is equal to the force it exerts (Torque) multiplied by its angular velocity (RPM). If you shorten the stroke of an engine, you then lesson the force it exerts (Torque)

With that being said, I stand by what I said earlier: If you shorten the stroke of an engine you will reduce power.

Does my offhanded, trying to be sly statement make sense now? ;)

And thanks for the offer on the physics lesson ...............I may take you up on it. ;)

So why didn't you say that in the first place?

Because I don't think most people would understand half of what you and I just wrote. Thats why I try to keep it simple, but every now and then SOMEONE forces me to explain things in more detail. ;)

So if you shorten the stroke you always reduce the power????

What about if you shorten the stroke and increase the bore?

You boys need to talk apples to apples.

I for one know enough about the internal combustion engine to know that this thread is in the wrong forum.

Building and over square motor has it's advantages in longevity but it will leave something behind in the torque game.. Suck it!.. lol
