Is this being taught in all Louisiana Public Schools?

My 12 yr. old 7th. grader is currently taking the course at her school...which honestly surprised the hell out of me.

I took it but not in school. I am actually happy that they require it. I just wish more people were required to get them in la.

They passed the law recently in LA that if you were born after January of 1984, you are required to have passed a boater's safety course in order to operate any motorized vessel over 10hp alone. However, if someone else in the boat was born before then, you are not required to have taken the course.

This straight from LDWF:

Mandatory Boating Education - All persons born after January 1, 1984, must complete a boating education course and carry proof of completion to operate a motorboat in excess of 10 horsepower. The person may operate the boat if accompanied by someone over 18 years of age who if required has completed the course.

It's required here too, completely agree with it. I meant I wish it would've been offered in school back then. As far as I know, it's still something you have to take on your own, away from school. I actually took an online safety course just to lower my insurance. It's funny how you can still learn a lil here & there, even after being raised on the water & having run boats by yourself for nearly 30 yrs.

Hopefully this class the kids are taking in school counts as the class that is required!

I had to take the Texas boaters course when I was young(er). Not only was it a state requirment but my dad had me do it as well before turning me loose with my jon boat with a 15 horse.

Learned a lot during the course, and even retained quite a bit after almost 20 years since taking it.
I think this is a great idea for everyone to have this course no matter what age you are.

Now if only they could somehow implement an IQ test device before anyone rides a Jet Ski... HMMM.

Alabama requires a boater safety course in order to test for a vessel license. I don't think the public schools offer it during school hours, but the Alabama Marine Police have regularly scheduled classes that they offer. I went to a private school, and when I was in seventh grade, the school brought AMP in to offer a class after school hours for anyone that wanted to take it. It meant that my friends and I all got the class out of the way to take our test at the DMV at one time, so it was a great deal for us.

Now I just wish they could change the law so that those jackass, out-of-state jet ski renters had to take a course. I can't tell you how many of those fuckers I've seen nearly kill themselves or someone else. I was running out of Perdido Pass in 4-5 footers one afternoon in my Regulator when I topped a wave, and a rental jet ski passed only a few feet in front of me (perpendicular to the channel) as the bow started to fall back toward the water... :o I pulled back the throttles, turned hard as I could to Starboard, and slammed the boat back down sideways, nearly throwing myself and my passenger out of the boat; only to watch the dumbass keep right on riding away, having ZERO CLUE of what had just happened... She never even saw me! I'll bet you if that 8,000 lb., 26 degree deep V had landed square on her head, she'd have never known about that either... :x Then I'd have probably gone to jail for having an open beer while driving and killing someone. Fuckin Tourists...

My 12 yr old took it on his own a year ago,he is almost always the designated driver,he even drove the truck home once.He gets pissed off when hes putting the boat on the trailer and I holler at him saying he docks just like a damn sport from baton rouge, also, the sports from baton rouge seem to get pissed too when I say that.

About the jet ski,I did notice that there was a few different mentions and explanations of em on the exam.

I wish they would make it mandatory for everyone regardless of age. It might be a pain in the ass for the older folks that been driving a boat forever, but maybe just maybe it would enlighten these ignorant fucking dbags in their new Baja that it don't have brakes and it don't handle like their 350z. ( no offense to any of you Baja / 350z drivers  ) Anybody that frequents the Tickfaw or Amite Rivers will get my point.

For those of you in LA who have taken the course online, which website did you use? They list two approved online courses; BoatUS.org or Boat-Ed.com. BoatUS.org is free, whereas Boat-Ed.com has a course fee of $24.50.

I could be wrong, but the only advantage I see with Boat-Ed is that they provide a study guide. The free course at BoatUs may also provide a study guide, but I didn't see it when I briefly viewed their website.

Just curious if any of you have some insight on either one of these courses.

I did the Boat US course. Seems like it gave me a review of everything prior to taking the tests. It's not rocket science, just pay attention & you'll pass it.
