Hello I am new to the forum. I am considering the purchase of a mud motor and boat for duck hunting. However after some research I feel ther is a lot of maintnenace on a mudd motor. I have also concluded there are lots of alterations that can be made to a stock motor which may create more maintnenace.

Do you need to be a mechanically inclinded person to successfully own a mudd motor???

Please provide insight as the above are only a laymans thoughts after some research,

Any input greatly appreciated. :D

If you are worried about maintenance, buy a GD. You will require very little maintenance if you are worried about it. That is what I did. I had a case gasket replaced and new coils put on but absolutely nothing has been done to the lower unit except a shot of grease now and then.

Dont fall into the whole "Get a GD" bs, if you cant rewire a new trim switch or some other minor thing that rarely happens you really don't need a MM

On a GDSD or anybrand of LT, changing props is a PITA. The threaded shaft design is just retarded, every time you hit something your prop and forward jam nut get tighter.
In less than 50 hrs run time, my stainless jam nut "walked" 1/4" past the threads and it just wore the threads in it smooth on up to the threadless sholder all the way to the seal housing, If I didn't pay attention to things like this it would have gaulded my threads and ruint my seals.

All things considered, it's one of the lowest maintenance things I've ever owned. Unless you consider gas to be maintenance (and it's even good on that). It' certainly the lowest maintenance boat engine I've ever seen. But then again, mine's a Go-Devil too... :o ;)

okay, this thread is already nigged so I will argue my point :lol:

With all the nuts and the prop tight there is no way for it to move back and forth, wear on the threads, and allow water in there. All that can Muff some threads up.

I hope I am onto something here so I can call all you GD owners Dumbasses, but if not... wouldn't be the first time I've been called one! :lol:

Did go-devil flash you with the flashy thing from men in black or do they have some sort of brainwashing kool aid that u drink when u buy one? Most of the issues with these setups are engine issues, not drive issues regardless of manufacturer . A go devil can break just like a pd, gtr , mb, ect . I've owned go devil products for years and while they are tough, they do do break.i know that's hard to believe for some but its the truth.

Loud and clear, i just find it comical that there is slew of gd lovers out there that can't wait for a new guy to ask a question about a new setup and when they do y'all all jump in and say how much more reliable gd is over all others. Sure i agree with u 100% that we have more gadgets to possibly fail but when someone pays the prices we all do for one of these setups, we want a lil more than a direct drive. Anyhow im done, im goin to the chevy dealer and see if they can build me a truck with one seat, no transmission or rear end, no reverse or anything that might compromise the reliability of the product. Ill let y'all know what i end up with

Daddyflea , you gotta push off the bank with a push pole or use your hands. If your in open water, you can just swing in and make a loop. Did it for years with my longtail. But yes, much easier with reverse and neutral. But be careful , they may fail on you :)

Dude, all I can say is I have owned lots of boats, and I am no expert on mud motors only owning one for about 200 of run time. But it is about the most maintaince free motor I have ran, and when something is wrong its is easy to diagnose.

I don't abuse mine as bad, probably as the southern boys but I have already saved hundreds in fixes and mechanics when I used to beat up my mercy jets in the same manner.
