I just recently purchased a 23hp Dixie mud motor and I have to say it performs great it just seems like i am not getting the speeds people say they are getting out of them. It is on a 1544 and it does 25 with one person, 20 with 2, and about the same with 3. (no gear) I am wondering if i am missing something or if this is normal. it has the prop it came with and i played with the trim. Could it have anything to do with the belts? (I am not complaining about the speeds it just seems like everyone flys even with two people.)

Did u adjust the throttle cable at all? When you first get it turn it on and there is a black throttle cable that goes to the back of the engine. There is an adjustment screw that you loosen and pull the throttle cable until you here the engine gain a little Rpms. This will help. Not sure on your size boat but with my Dixie 23 I get 23 with two people on a 1648. Call Ben and he can help you.

That sounds pretty realistic for a 23. All these folks claiming to run upper 20's with a 12-18hp motor I think are full of shit.

Based on my years of offshore boating it seems that the light weight Jon boats do well with low Hp motors since they tend to plane. As you add weight the hull dynamics change to a plowing type of motion and that’s what eats up the HP.

I’m running a Dixie mud motor on a tricked out Honda Gx 390 with an alumacraft 1442 jon boat. Painted the bottom with steel flex.

Max 24 mph. Cruise 20 mph single person. Bogs down to 16 mph with additional passengers.

Best of luck !

Sounds pretty good. It took me forever to get the trim perfect on mine to get to 26mph and that was on a first gen steel frame. Just keep playing with the trim and you should gain a little when its spot on for your boat. Thats why Im going power tilt this time plus some other stuff.
