Post Toyota owners
Im close to start looking for a toyota to replace my explorer. Probably wont be buying new....probably 2000 and up. Are the transmissions good in them? Im wanting a 4dr 4x so the fam will have enough room to ride. I doubt i go with big tires but i need something that i can pull my boat with and not have issues. Will their v6 do this?

Early Tundras were junk. Uncle bought one to tow 25' camper. After 3rd transmission, he lemon lawed it.

My boat will be the only thing i pull. I took my explorer in to have the transmission serviced on my explorer and the guy told me if i kept it and kept pulling the boat it would end up toast. It has a lift and a little bigger tires on it and said it was just too much strain on the tranny. That just got me thinking about the yota tranny. Wanted to make sure it was all good before i started looking.

I had a Tacoma 4x4 hated it. Don't get me wrong no problems just was a rough riding truck specially when pulling my boat are with a load in the back. Went from a full size 4 door truck to it now back to a full size 4 door. No comparison between the two style trucks. As for gas mileage 18 was the best it would get with v6 when hooked to the boat and pulling 70-75 10 miles per gallon. My v8 does better in both areas

The 3.0 V6's are turds.

My 4-runner was awesome for throwing stuff in and running through the woods, but it was a dog with a load and got horrible gas mileage.

Toyotas are reliable no doubt but the z71's and f150's are more comfortable, more powerful, bigger, and get equal gas mileage (better when pulling). My buddy has a Tacoma crew 4x4 and it got like 8 mpg when he pulled a 6x10 enclosed trailer. Look for a big boy truck

Had an '04 Tundra and loved everything except I forgot to get 4 wheel drive. Pulled 18' Boston Whaler and 22' Sailboat well with the 4.7 (I think) V-8. Many miles towwing. Talked to the guy that bought it. 180,000 on the clock now no problems at all. Dad has the 4-Runner with same V-8 and does great. He tows a 22' Whaler with a cuddy cabin with it. A litttle scary but it does it.

My 2010 f150 FX4 5.4 gets around 16 mpg pulling my boat. I'm not really sure what gears is in the rear end. I'm guessing the 3:55, but when I hook up to my 18ft trailer with the side by side on it I only get around 12 to 13 mpg

I have a 2011 tundra and it by far the best truck I've ever owned (and I've owned them all including a couple of diesels). It's not great on mpg -average around 15 with the V8- but it's a beast! I've pulled just about everything including a 8.5x24 cargo trailer loaded with over 10k lbs and it rolls with no problems.

My wife has a 2011 4 runner wi the v6 and it will pull my boat ok, but nothing like the V8. It's a good family ride, but I wish we would have gotten the sequoia.

I like my tundra. Gas mileage sucks due to 35s but it looks good.

I had a '06 4 door 4wd Tacoma and had to put two transmissions in it under warranty, I got out of before I hit 80K miles. It was plenty strong but the brakes sucked and right after the warranty it had electrical problems inside with the center console. The rear leaf springs squeaked so bad I replaced them with 10 leaf racing springs. It was a love hate deal with it, it was awesome off road but had too many issues. My dad has a 4 door 2wd Tundra with 180K miles and only replaced the serpentine belt, it's been a great truck. My wife had an 05 4Runner for 6 years and never had a problem.

I had a 04 Tacoma 4x4 with the 3.4L v6. Put a 285/75/16 mud tire on it and looked great. Loved gas so went back to stock size tires. Loved the truck, hated the gas mileage. Went from a z71 to Tacoma and now back in a z71 and get better gas mileage, pull more weight, and more room

Big truck is the only way. I've had my ford ranger and loved it but small. I went to a colorado(never owned a bigger pos) now I've got my full sized dodge with the multi displacement hemi. Love it. And gets better gas mileage than my ranger did.

If I didnt have to have a diesel, i would either have a newer F150, or the Tundra like RJ & Shafer.

I had to back Shafer's truck down the ramp before at night, and when I got in it, I couldnt find the switch for the headlights. Theres more buttons in that truck than a space ship.
