Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
Well it's time to replace my trailer bunks and I think I'm going to add a couple more for a little added support but was just wondering what people like to use. Should I use just a pine board, carpeted board, or some sort of plastic? Just wondering what people are using and like

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
Whatever you do...do not use carpet. I just had to repair a small crack in my boat that is only four years old. You can see where the boat sits on the carpeted bunks when it was removed to be repaired. It appears the crack started from the water pitting the bottom some.

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
I've heard a lot of horror stories, mostly people that use treated wood to make a deck. It will eat right through the aluminum.

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
From my understanding its the chemical they use to treat the wood that reacts with aluminum. I would use something else besides untreated wood. I have carpet on my boards...

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
I just have regular yellow pine 4x4s. I had those plastic covers on my last bay boat and they were nice! I'm about to put them on the mud boat. And there so much easier to install

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
On my Mclain I have the carpet with the slick strips screwed down on top. Really nice for pushing the GDSD off the trailer in shallow water or a ditch. On my plateboats I use 4x4 with the slick pads between the treated wood and aluminum. I'm a big fan of the slick strips or slick pads. When they wear down I take my cordless drill and a set of slick strips to the ramp. Launch and repair. They will never wear down on my GDSD rig. However on my plateboat trailers they get thrashed launching and loading several times a day. I read up on the treated boards vs aluminum and seen where it may cause some serious problems. My boats have enough adversaries with out adding more to the list.

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
http://www.basspro.com/Bunk-Slick-Boat- ... 00500571/#Here's an option too (never used), but you get ten 3"X16" for $38. So that's just over 13' if you butt each one up to eachother, but you could obviously space them and get WAY more coverage for a ten pack.

Anybody every thought about buying a composite board such as Trex and using as a guide on? May or may not be cheaper than buying the composite guide-ons they sell.

I think this is the best way to do itImageUploadedByTapatalk1371069951.721308.jpg
Really easy to install and if you put them on treated wood it will last forever

Re: Whaty to use for trailer bunks?
Just replaced the orginal carpeted bunks on my 2007 G3 aluminum bass boat. They where molded and rotted. I have 4 bunks on my trailer. Two 5' on the sides and two 9' in the middle. I used untreated 2x4 pine and ripped plastic cutting boards from Sam's Club down to 3.25" wide on a table saw. Countersunk coated decking screws to hold the plastic strips to the 2x4's. Looks nice and the boat slides off sooooo easy compared to carpet. I have about $15 in lumber and $40 in the cutting boards. I figure the cutting boards will last forever and I will just get new 2x4's every few years. My wood boards should last longer too, now that they are not completly wrapped in that water holding heavy marine carpet. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/bakers-che ... /126035.ip
