 Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
I know this topic has been debated countless times, but I'm in the market for a SDMM and I'm trying to pick between the two. When you factor in the galvanized frame, fuel filter/water trap, and tachometer into the 35HP GD price it's actually $100 more with shipping than a painted 36HP PD w/o reverse. I have no need for reverse where I live so that's not going to be an issue here. Having neutral is a plus in my book, but then again the price of breaking a gear is something to consider - or worse, breaking one in the water miles away! With GD its as easy as having a spare belt and a few tools on board and you're good to go.
I hate to ask this because I know what I'm getting myself into, lol, but without this turning into a pissing match and with all things considered, which is the better option?
I'm personally leaning towards the PD, but the issue and price of replacing the gears is holding me back.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
Gear failure is about as common as snow in south louisiana... And even that is probably not a rare enough occurrence to give you an accurate idea. Unless you plan on jumping a concrete wall everyday, there's no reason to worry about any gears breaking on a ProDrive. And you can always add reverse later, can't do that to a go devil.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
PD hands down all the way. I would do a GD LT before a GDSD.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
How can I say this and not piss anyone off? Well let me give it a shot. I own a GDSD. Smooth, runs great in mud, not so great in grass and it does not have neutral. I like the motor. With that being said, get a ProDrive. It is crazy good in grass and it has neutral. They are both well built machines and both have great service. You will really like a GDSD but you will love a prodrive.

GDLT, not GDSD. Go with the Pro Drive SD.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
PD for sure. Not much difference between the GDSD and the GDLT. No neutral is just out dated.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
Nobody drives a GDSD on purpose. They all either
A.) Got a deal too good to pass up
Or
B.) Didn't know any better when they purchased it and knew the Go Devil name from producing reliable long tails for a long time so they stuck with the brand
Or
C.) Are named Gigafowl

Thanks for the info. I only saw one post regarding issues with PD gears. Anyone out there have anymore input relating to gear failure with a PD? Is it as rare as CJB says?

My lower unit is an 04 with 400+ hrs. There is also a guy that has a 150 mercury power head strapped to a pd lower unit.

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
When a belt pops your done until you can fix it. I have yet to hear or see gears go out without warning. I had a old style 07 LU go out back in 08 at the Caddo run. I talked to Peck who was there and he said run it! I drove that thing for over 4 hours beating and banging like ten monkeys with 20 ball peen hammers in a metal drum! It never did lock up, made it back to the launch afterwards with no problem, and I had a new one waiting for me when I got back home! There warranty and customer service is great!!

 Re: Pro Drive or Go-Devil?
The gears are stong dude that'll be the least of your worries. Not sayin u are but if your thinking there anything like an outboard motors gears there not, it like comparing little league to big league. Only regret you'll have is not getting reverse
