Post MUD BUDDY 5500 MAG HELP
Took the boat out this weekend and it ran great for the first half of the day Saturday. Later that afternoon I ran it again and it ran fine until I would spin over 4200 rpms or so then it would back fire and shut off. I started it back up and same thing happened, luckily I was right by the house and idled in. I tried to start the motor the next morning with no luck until finally it decided to turn over. I took it out and it ran like a champ and idles great now but still doesn't want to start at all. The motor has 35 hours on it and has never had any issues. Any advice would be appreciated.

Try disconnecting the rev limiter the next time it won't start. Should be a green wire.

You sure? I thought that was same motor, but with "cooler" name.

BAMF and MAG are same engine they are both non CDI...the BD models are the CDI, but none of the BLACK DEATH models have the internals. If it is CDI won't the wrong clearance on the coils cause it to lose RPM like he is describing?

it is actually reffered to as just Mag 5500

somewhere along the way they created a decal for the front of the engine labeled 5500 bamf

I think mainly because many people prefer the single mikuni carb over the dual setup, that and because of not having any stock components

This motor has been put on a dyno and produced 52 hp.

All the 5500 mags/bamf r now cdi"s.... Bamf is just a term... It is still a 5500 mag.

As for your issue sounds to me like your plug wires may be rubbed at the cowling. When this happens the motor will do exactly what you are saying when the wires get wet... Check this first...

This would explain why it is fine at times and not others also

Thanks for the help. Tried starting it last night and had the same issue until I found the loose connection. Now it cranks and runs like new.

I disconnected then re connected all my wires and noticed a few were slightly loose, but one of my ground wires was hardly connected. Not sure which wire was the actual cause of the problem.

Gus, the HD 5500 runs best at 4500-4550 rpms with a normal load (what this means to each person is up for debate). This is from experience, as well as advice from Boat dr. This is the rpm target to ensure you have the right gears for your what ever set up you have.

apologies to the Georgian Cajun for the insult. :-P

for me, a load is three guys (600lbs), and my two boys (165lbs - one dog/one human) and dekes. that's why I am going with the 1860.

you guys agree that the BD5500 will struggle?! I just worry that with my luck i'll hit the 1% lottery on the 5500 MAG/BAMF/WTF ELSE YOU WANNA CALL IT...

That boat will run fine with the BD5500 (Stock Internals). My last boat was an older 2004 Gatortrax 20x54 with the BD5500 on it. It had no problem getting on step with 8 guys in it. We are at a higher (4500ft) altitude as well. Most of your load carrying ability will come from having the larger boat with more running surface.
