Just depends what u wanna spend. I like at least a 5 inch screen and a mounted unit. I run a Humminbird 798C HD SI and have for a few years now.

Cajun, can you use the garmin maps with it?i like the idea of the garmin because you can use the same maps in you mounted unit as your handheld.

Can you run just the chart and not the depth finder. I don't want to rip off my transducer but I do want the chart.

Yes I don't even have a transducer for my mud boat but I will be buying an alumadcer for it eventually so I can use the depth finder function

Ok. Thanks. Those alumaducers are ridiculous expensive. I looked at them too.

I got a humminbird with gps. I run a transducer in summer for fishing then just remove transducer and plug the holes with the mounting bolts and silicone the shit out of it for hunting season. Most the time i use google maps on my phone for getting to my spots

I use the lowrance elite 4. I like it mostly, but it's dumb how the power cable and transducer cable are split off the same plug. I mount my transducer on the trolling motor in summer, then coil the transducer up and throw it in a dry box in the boat that my switch panel is mounted in.

Garmin 441s is a bullet proof unit with real good base maps for coastal waters but they're still sucking hind tit as far as fresh water goes (they are getting there though). I've always liked their operational simplicity and durability. I'm still runnin' the standard transducer although it's on a very "custom" mount now and works great but next time it gets ripped off the alumaducer gets plugged in. For fishin' detail I run a cheap Humminbird on the trolling motor that has sonar and temp. One word of advice though, DON'T clean the screens on these newer units, don't even touch the SOB till you stop somewhere and buy some skin to put on it!
