 20hp surfacedrive no speed!!!!!
I have built a surfacedrive mud motor witch I thought would be a lot faster than it is. Any idea why it's not. I'm running a 20 hp vanguard brand new. I'm running a chain and sprockets only for cost cause I had it laying around. I'm running 17 tooth top and 17 bottom and a 9.5x9 hill marine prop. My motor is all stock and my boat is a 1448 riveted. Motor weighs about 160ish. When motor is sitting flat with my boat the propshaft is 3" above the bottoms of boat but also can trim way down. Boat goes 12 with me and a friend and the motor seems to be on the governor. If I push the linkage to bypass the governor it'll pick up about 3 mph. Any help to get more speed would be great. The boat get to speed quick then just stops Thanks

Im far from an expert but I believe it has to do with the teeth on ur sprockets. Normally its a bigger on top and way smaller on bottom. That way it turns the prop alot faster than motor. Id change them and see what happens.... sort of like a bike. Big tooth on drive section(motor) less teeth on propulsion section (prop).

Ya want the bigger pulley on the bottom not the top. Try to move the wieght around in the boat. Run it alone and find the sweet spot. Also get a tach for your motor it will help alot.

 Re: 20hp surfacedrive no speed!!!!!
I changed the top sprocket from a 16 to a 19 and picked up a couple mph. It gets up to max speed in about a 100' I was running it with myself and a buddy and 3 dozen decoys. Burlap ect. Still if I push the governor it picks up speed. I think tomorrow I'm gunna try a bigger top sprocket. Ill post a picture of it tomorrow.

I'm running a belt setup but close to same idea. I have a large pulley on top and small on bottom. I have a 1442 riveted Jon with a 25. Getting 24-25 alone and high teens with two people and hunt load.
