A guy brought in a pd with a guard built around that he wanted to rebuild. The one he has on it is 1/8 carbon and we are going to build ours out of 1/8 alum. I guess he wants it to look a little better and be tighter against the motor and more holes for ventilation. I will keep y'all posted as we build it. He does understand that these are AIR cooled motors, right? There is a MUCH better way to secure wiring than impeding the flow of air to your motor. That spells trouble to me..... Don't care how many vent holes you put, you are creating a space to trap heat, and choking the air flow around the motor. These motors are designed to flow air in a certain way and when you mess with that, you are asking for trouble. I would charge him for NOT building it for him, kick him in the nuts, and send him on his way. Have run thru tons of brush and thickets, and if you secure your wiring, you should have no problem. |

He knows a guy that has one that is more ventilated and he has had it for 2+ years. I was worried about it myself but he has had this one for about 2 seasons now and no problems. He is wealthy man and I'm thinking about writing something in the invoice saying that we are not liable for anything having to do with and engine problems. Ehh, every lawn mower I've ever seen has a hood/ cover over it. As long as you don't impede air flow to the blower/fan and don't trap in exhaust heat it should be fine. But in all reality, Most of the wiring is safely tucked in behind the tiller. So imo the things that actually need the most protection would be the oil cooler and filter. a simple 1/8 shroud around them would do the job just fine. I would also think about making a skid plate to go over the air filter box. Same thing 1/8 plate and utilize the 2 back fan guard bolts to hold it on. In laymans terms instead of building one fugly big ole box, make a few small protective shrouds. |

I would cover the oil cooler, and try to do a small cover for all the wires around the starter, and maybe a small piece covering the spark plug wires and make sure the fuel line is covered. PD has a brace for the fuel line where it goes into the fuel pump. It will help keep from breaking off the plastic fitting on the fuel pump if your fuel line gets snagged. |

If you had something blocking the fan from pulling in air that might hurt it, but that surrounding it shouldn't. It wont hurt it any worse than those retarded oil coolers people put on the flywheel cover. I think it is a good idea to have the tiller controls protected, but I think having them off the tiller and in the boat somewhere would keep them from ever getting bent back or torn off. I might would trim it down around the front where it isn't so gawdy and just have a tight fitting shroud around the sides that fits low to the plastic shroud. That would look pretty sharp! |
