Post subject:  Shop Ideas

Just bought a house and it has a 24x30 shop. The shop is a wood frame not metal building and finished on the inside. Never had a shop or even a garage up until this point so I was hoping to get some layout ideas and see some other shops/garages.

Leave it open and put as many shelves as you can fit, and also a really good sized workbench. BIGGER then you will ever think you will need!!!

Work bench down one wall and the other 2 with shelves with a 24" shelf all the way around it with a bathroom
In one corner. I know a guy that has had 2 shops like this and is a very good layout.

I'm moving in my new crib on the 7th. It already has a 24x28 slab poured. I share ur excitement! Never had a shop either. I'm gonna out decoy racks around the walls when I get it built. And a big work bench is a necessity!

How high is the ceiling? If high enough hang an ibeam get a trolley and chain hoist. Shelves everywhere around the perimeter, work branch off center so you can walk all the way around. Maybe loft storage. Big screen!

Loft storage would be legit though if u have the room! Like having a second attick. Don't tell the wife about it though, she will fill it full of all her crap!

2 post swing arm car hoist, takes a lot of room up in shop but you will never do brakes or work on cars, ATVs, skid steers, trucks ect on your back - and it will pay for itself in less than a year just doing brakes and wheel bearings (the easy stuff)

Put everything on casters. Especially your tool box. Makes it easy for moving heavy objects as well as reorganizing when you get a big project. I always like having a mechanical area and a carpentry area. I find keeping the area separated helps to organize your tools and keep each area cleaner.

I have a 20 x 30 shop. Imbed chains in cement floor to lock down your heavy equipment if you're pouring slab. If existing building insert similar to lock down your equipment. Your stuff will walk away if in rural area.

Peg board down your work bench wall.

24 wide and 30 deep and has 1 9ft garage door on one side. I'm no plumber but the shop is down hill from the septic so I'm think any running water is out with out another tank. Ceilings are 8 ft and it has an old window unit AC that's not running but I will most certainly have another.. It has a small work bench already and some old useless kitchen style cabinets that I've ripped out. Only big stuff I'll be keeping will be boat and mower. Just trying to get some ideas for organization.

Post subject:  Re: Shop Ideas

since its laid out like it is I would put my work bench in the back corner opposite the garage door and any shelving on the 30 foot wall away from garage door as well. I would leave the garage door side and the back wall opposite the door free of any shelving or benches so you have room to walk and work around your boat or whatever your gonna pull in there.

Well I have a door halfway down the 30 wall.. And another in the front wall corner opposite the garage door.. And the way the doors swing you really can't put a whole lot between the two.. If that makes sense

Right now I'm thinking shelves across the back wall, and cabinets with a counter top and cabinets above starting at the man door going back.

If you do a lot if woodworking, a cyclone dust collection system mounted on a wall and a hose long enough to reach your tools.

Another nice thing would be a 60 gallon air compressor in a corner and hard lines run across the ceiling with drop points where you would be using air.

Bathroom is key, nothin like having a turd sneak up on ya in the middle of a project and having to walk to the house...Shelves, large bench, castors on everything is also nice... Dont skimp on electric outlets (if your going 220)... have one for the welder, plasma, compressor (hose reel is handy as well) , ect... bigger sink would good... dont forget the BFH...

We are also putting a shop up 81x120,and looking into certain things as well. So far gonna have a pit in the floor, welding area with fans, work bench with peg board to hang wrenches on, lots of storage shelving and cabinets for filters and such, office area with bathroom and wash sink. Like original OP if you guys have some suggestions iam all ears.. Gonna start in April if this weather ever straightens out..

Best idea I had was to get a 12 x 16 shed and tell the wife that is hers. Keeps my 18 x 30 for my toys and tools
