When engine is idling In neutral prop still spins fast. It has gotten worse(faster) spin as time goes on. Only got 81 hours on it.... Is this a sign of something? Is this normal? |

Time to tear into that lower unit |

How does the lower unit have anything to do with it? When the clutch is up top? Something is rubbing and not disengaging all the way Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Yeah she is kinda tight. Not banjo string tight but she isn't loose... My buddy mentioned that is was a little tight when we installed my engine back to the frame last week Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Ok, so let me explain why this happens. This has to do with the planetary. When you are in neutral, you are free spinning the planetary. Depending on the thickness of the oil you use in there is going to determine how fast the prop spins. Thin hot oil=less drag and slower prop rpm in neutral, thick cold oil=more drag causing the prop to spin faster. If you know how a planetary gearbox works then you should be able to understand this. If it's getting faster as you put more time in it then your oil is either leaking out the rear seal or you are using thicker oil as of recently. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk |

Just take the little plug out and pump fresh grease into the LU. Every gtr spins a little bit in neutral. And no you don't have to tear down and rebuild your LU |

Yes I understand how planetary gears work and that makes sense. Thanks. Using Castrol 10-w30 same as engine. Is this what yal run? Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

I use the same as my engine oil, but once that rear seal starts leaking, I'll start using actual 90w gear oil. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk |

I have never ran across one that doesn't spin in neutral. NEVER EVER and EVER !! Don't care what DDM or anyone else says about theirs not spinning. I just know that its the norm for what I've seen ( which is in the hundreds ). And Truthfully with a tie rap and the reverse lever I can post a video of one not turning too! LOL PD doesn't spin because it has a break built into the clutch when disengaged. It spins because it still has the friction of the clutch bearings spinning on the PTO shaft. Which is a great thing if you think about it. It tells you your lower unit is free and not binding in the slightest. The Planetary gear is not in operation until you apply pressure to the rotor. Now once you get the planetary moving it then becomes weight in motion and acts like a flywheel. |

in North Alabama I am the only person I know with a gtr and as I noticed it getting faster after I installed my motor back on the frame I wanted to know. I don't care if it spins but when it idles me around the boat ramp in neutral I get curious |

Just apply a small amount of pressure on the reverse handle when you want to come to a complete idle in open water. Doesn't take much at all to get it to stop rotating. |

I think it's funny when someone tries to tell me how to operate my boat when I can steer 35 barges down the Mississippi River. But thanks for the mechanical advice since that's what I originally asked for |

Has anyone really seen this bayouboy in person? He knows an awful lot about the inner workings of a Gator Tail? From Venice?? Just curious. |

So does Gatortail actually have a real neutral? Yes or no? UMRking do you ever work up around Cairo/Hickman area? I have been comm fishing there and I am super impressed with the driving on some of those bends. Lots of horsepower being used there. |

Yeah Ingram has a fleet in Columbus, KY we go down there to drop and pick up barges... I like coming through Cairo it's always interesting to see the Mississippi and Ohio meet |

Post subject: | Re: Gtr prop spinning even in neutral |
I may have made it sound confusing with my post. But yes it has neutral engaged with a switch kind of like turning your lawn mower blades on and off. If that's what you were asking. Thru the planetary gear reverse system there is a little friction in there causing the propellar to spin slowly. Enough to barely make your boat move.. Fat baby crawl barely |
