Best options for a youth shotgun? I've got an old single shot .410 that's kinda family tradition, been used by about 7-8 of my brothers or cousins but it's really not cut down for young kids. Fits a 10-12 yr old pretty good. My 7 yr old asks me about every 3 days if we can get it out and see if his arms are long enough yet. Who makes a good pump for young 'uns? And what are your experiences with em? I'm wondering if a gun that's cut down small enough for him is gonna be so light it kicks like a mule.

Mossburge makes a very small 20 gauge it does kick a little if he isn't scared he will do fine with it but if he is a little nervous he may not want to shoot again it's kind of light being it's smaller than regular youth models my 10 year old shoots one he was scared of the kick last year but he has been shooting it quite often lately

The youth 870 or the mossberg 500 20 gauge. I just sold my old mossberg 20 gauge. It was over. 20 years old and still shooting good.

My son has both but the 870 is twice as big as the new mossberg mini youth I bought the mossberg after the 870 because it fit him better soon as he gets a little older he will switch back to the 870 but for now the mossberg actually fits him it's a very small gun

I got a 500 20gauge that is very light and short when you take off the recoil pad. Otherwise Browning makes a bps micro 20guage that is built for kids.

I have the big bps and that thing kicks like a mule

Post subject:  Re: Best youth shotgun?

The BP micro is just a small frame shotgun for a woman older kid. Length of pull is 13in and regular is like 14 1/4 so it's not that small

My first shotgun was a youth model Mossberg 500. If I remember right it came with an order form to upgrade to a regular length stock for 20$. For the price they are tough to beat. I shot deer slugs and bird shot with mine and performed well

I bought my boys the 870 20ga combo (26" bird barrel/ rifled slug barrel) in adult size when they were 10. I then bought the speedfeed youth stocks and once they got big enough, I was able to throw the adult stock back on. They are now in their 20s and still use them. Cost was under $400 total per gun at that time.

I know they are expensive but I went with a Benelli M2 because it was the lightest non single shot I could find for my son to shoot. I wanted him to be able to hit something as soon as possible so I was more worried about weight and fit. I did make sure when we dove hunted that we took turns shooting so I could make sure he was putting the safety on and being safe with it at all times.

A few of the kids that I hunt with started out with the Remington youth model 1100. They have the bird barrel and rifled slug barrel and are great little guns with no recoil.

Legacy sports has the escort youth 20 gauge auto with 13 inch length of pull and 22 inch barrel also have a muddy girl edition with 26 inch barrel for women. I bought my gf the muddy girl edition of the tristar 20 gauge. It has a 24 inch barrel and 13 inch length of pull. It's been a nice gun and both the escort and the tristar and very well priced

Tristar 20. The main reason I looked at this gun was the price and the fact that it was an automatic. I looked at several different guns for my yr old at the time (he's 11 now) but its all the same. He was going from a 410 to a 20 and all the nice pumps are nothing more than a glorified crack barrel. I was told that Tri-Star bought out the Beretta 390 patent. My sons gun looks very similar to the 390. The other main reason I bought it was the fact it shoots 3" mags and comes with chokes. Its gas operated and at 8, he was shooting 3" mags and not scared of it because of the gas operation. Good gun till to this day. I ended up buying 3 of them, my 2 kids and a buddys. The gun comes with replaceable and interchangeable barrels and stocks so that when your older, you can change out the stock to a adult as well as barrel length. Use it as a dove gun or whatever. This is the only pic I could find of it. You can see it leaning up against the tree.

I bought my son the Tristar 20 auto late last year. Unfortunately the first time out it failed to cycle. Gonna clean it one more time and if it fails again, Academy here I come.

I also traded for a Beretta AL2 20 auto. Used, the gun has a value of around 300-350. Nice engraving and light. There are a few of them on gunbroker.

Im not saying it is the best but I just bought my kids a Mossberg 505 youth 410. It is a very small pump that they can handle easily. Theres is a fixed choke barrel in modified and Macs sell steel. My brother bought his kids a 500 super bantam in 20 gauge but it whooped up on them and now they are scared of it.

I got the Tri Star for my son too - great little gun, it doubles as the barn shotgun also so it takes a beating and keeps on going. If you are using cheap shells or reloads clean chamber and gas ports real good. Recoil is almost non-exsistant with this gun also
