Any recommendations on a depth finder / GPS . I'm looking to mount one on my dash of my consol. I am not very familiar with what's out there. |

I vote garmin for user friendliness. It's all i've ever used with no complaints. The lowrance and hummiinbird are probably good also. I hear they take a little longer to get everything figured out. |

I'm partial to lowrance. I like their option to add the sonic hub and control the radio via the head unit. Also the structure scan is pretty amazing as well. All the big name brands are good it simply what features you like having. |

I have a new humming bird 899ci mounted with a horizontal 2 pivot ram mount on my side console. It works good for what I need, anymore I think it's personal preference, |

I'm a Garmin fan, but a friend of mine just bought a new Z7 and rigged it with Humminbird Helix7 machines and they seem to be pretty happening units! |

I might get that one. It's not flush but the mounting system looks pretty low profile. |

Lowrance makes a good product. But to use the structure scan you have to buy the 500 dollar transducer separate along with the regular transducer, so you have to run two of them. And with it being a flat transom down the back it's hard to mount them because the lower unit will interfere with side imaging in most places and you have dual motors with opposite spinning props so you've got even less room to work with because of the prop wash being thrown in both directions. Graphs now a days are amazing with detail but it doesn't take much to interfere with them because they are so sensitive. If you want simplicity get the HDS 7 touch as said, its touch screen and works almost like an iPhone. Humminbirds are a little more confusing and require you to really spend some time with it to learn how to use it but you can fine tune them a little more. Whatever you get go ahead and buy the navionics map card. It actually has most of the sabine basin marked really well. Also the problem with flush mounting is the screen is stuck at that angle so if the sun hits it just right you can't see the screen and you are sol because you can't angle it. Id honestly just mount it using the gimbal mount it comes with because you can adjust it for different sunlight conditions and the angle of the sun. I've had one flush mounted and I'll never do it again. If your back was to the sun you couldn't see anything on the screen without trying to throw a shadow over it with your hand. Sorry for the long post but I just don't want to see you waste your money or not be as happy as you thought you were going to be because I see it all the time in the bass fishing world. |

Honestly I care less about the structure scan. I know most of the areas I fish pretty damn well. I'm mainly concerned about a depth finder and GPS. Mainly GPS. I hardly ever run the Sabine River area or Sabine lake. I mainly stick to calcasieu ( Big ) lake area and west ward of Sabine lake. I just prefer I flush mount. Plus my consol is all ready set up for a flush mount. Plus One less thing to bump against and break. I appreciate your input though thank you. |

They had a good sale on the Lowrance Elite 5 not long ago... I should have scooped one up then. Thats what I'll be going with next spring. Either that one, or a similar Garmin. |

Huminbird 997si is all you need. I have used them all in a commercial fishing application and more than satisfied with the Huminbird units. |
