I need some help! Im getting ready to build my first mud motor. I have an alumacraft 14th Jon boat. I currently run a 2.5hp mercury outboard but I'd like to get around a little faster. Im looking at a beaver dam or sps long tail kit and trying to decide what hp motor to go with. The tag on my boat says im only rated for 15hp. There are usually 3 grown men plus all our waterfowl gear and the added weight of a blind on the boat. Im looking at a predator 8hp or the 14hp predator. Is the 14hp (86lb dry weight) too much? Is the 8hp (63lb dry weight) enough. And how fast can I expect to go with the two? Any help would be appreciated. God bless!

I had the sps long tail kit with a 14hp and it was a turd on my 14 foot jon boat. . I would go 14hp predator and then modify it. The reason I say predator because I heard that predator and Honda have the same performance parts. So get the 14 hp and upgrade it to produce more horsepower. Now I have a 1754 37gator tail and worry about nothing.

that's a start but I would get into the internal workings of the engine. Heads , intake, exhaust, jet the carb. Look up the backwater performance systems performance section for non efi engine and you can see what their kits offer. From mild to extreme. Google predator 420cc mods and there is whole list and even a shopping section that you can look at and determine the best combination.
