 Which 25HP? GTR? HDR? What else? Well, this question isn’t meant to start a shit show – so let us keep it civil! Couldn't really find what I was looking for using search.
I need a new 25HP surface drive to throw on my new hull. I currently have a 23hp Backwater SWOMP Lite that I’ll run for a few more months or so. Outside of hunting, I run a lot of jugs and trotlines where having reverse is a huge help – especially when taking kids along to help check the lines.
The only SD I’ve been around is a 23 GoDevil. I was ready to jump on the GTR bandwagon, but I’m hearing rumors of possibly better or new options? MB advertises the HDR w/a 25 Robin on their website, but I’ve been told they are still working on the design and only have 1 right now. What other options exist? What other 25HP options should I look at?
I’ve never ran either, and never looked too hard at them. Ease to switch to neutral and reverse quickly and often will be a huge sell point for me, assuming reliability is still there. I’m hoping for some good advice. This forum steered my Backwater SWOMP last year, and it was a great decision. Been an awesome motor, with no complaints. A need for neutral/reverse/tighter turning are only reasons I’m getting another motor.

Re: Which 25HP? GTR? HDR? What else? The hdr or the gtr would both likely serve you well. The hdr is built on the HD design, with a purpose built electric clutch designed specifically for their reverse. The gtr has been around a while and though it has had some minor changes to the reverse, it's proven to work. One is electric, one is mechanical. Take your pick, as they'll both do exactly what you need.

FYI on the HDR, i talked to boat dr before ordering my GTR and he said since the GTR is actually 28 hp mud buddy was going to use the non EFI subaru which only puts out 25 hp and it doesn't have the same cam in it as the EFI model, so don't expect the performance out of it, they may have changed plans since then but apparently they wanted it to be a true 25 hp to avoid legal issues

Re: Which 25HP? GTR? HDR? What else? If reverse is optional try JB Mud Motors. It has an electric clutch with forward/neutral/ momentary forward. They run the 28hp efi Robin/Subaru at a great price
