 Hummingbird helix 9
Does anyone have a Humminbird helix 9 ? I'm thinking about getting one and want some feedback from anyone that has one or has used one.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
I thought about the 7 but I can get the 9 for 100 more bucks so I figured bigger is better. I'm just not sure if it's not gonna be to big.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
Comparable Lowrance (gen 2 model) was about $200 more but the kicker for me was that it required running 2 seperate transducers (one extra very large transducer for structure scan).

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
I have a helix 5 and I love it. If you can I'd get the SI version. Well worth the extra $$$. The helix series is so easy to use and set up. I love my 5 and to my understanding the 9 is just a bigger screen. My 5 even worked great ice fishing with the right transducer.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
My only complaint is switching from different screens. I think there is 14 different screens options and you only have a forward and backward functionality

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
Money talks! Bass pro had a $75 rebate when I bought mine. So I paid 625 for the helix 7 with si. Seemed like a decent deal to me. I think for the money they are good units, but Lowrance is the cream of the crop.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
I just bought a helix 7 di to put in my new rig, got it at what I thought was a good deal off of jet.com. you can get 30 bucks off of your first purchase. Not saying the 9 will be too big, but the 7 is pretty large. I hope its a good unit. The reviews just didn't seem to be great on the lowrance stuff.

I have a helix 5 too and love it. Been eyeballing the helix 9 myself. If you get one Krazo let me know how it is.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
I looked today and the difference between the 7 and 9 is about 3.5 inches so I went with the 9.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
As far as the budget units go I think as far as technology, the helix is better just for the fact that you have the option of SI vs DI. The similar units now are the lowrance hero series. It's the same thing as the elite chirp series, but with new plastic. The lowrance sonar is better Imo but side scan is superior to down scan if you can only pick 1 hd option. Lowrance bargain series units only have down scan. Lowrance is easier to navigate imo. I picked up a lowrance elite 5 hdi (same thing as a hero minus the chirp technology... has gps.downscan.sonar) for $220.the 5 7 and 9 hdi's are discontinued now due to the hero series and are really cheap on ebay. Brand new 9 hdi's are available for less than $500. Just something to keep in mind
It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
So how is your new unit working? I have the 998 on one of my boats and seen the helix 9 at gander mtn . Really thinking about the 9 for my other boat. Looking for real reviews.

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
It should be here by the end of the week. One of those things where you give someone the money and they get it at work and send it to you so it's a waiting thing now. Then I'll have to wait on a buddy of mine to build a transducer mount for it. Also I have to order a ram mount. But I'm not gonna be a good one to give a review because I have never had a nice unit before.

Got the helix 9 mounted I haven't mounted the transducer yet but so far so good. I was worried it was going to be in the way but it's not. Thanks hotsause170 for the ram mount!

 Re: Hummingbird helix 9
I just picked up the helix 9 also. ready to test it out this weekend. It nice with the larger screen to see contour lines with the map chip. I have mine mounted near the tiller but can see everything i need from the bow running the trolling motor. I got just the down imaging gps/sonar model for a little over $500 with tax. GPS locks in so much faster than my 587i that was only a few years old. More screen view options than you could want and you can program your favorite views so they are one click away. Also no glare and easy viewing with polarized sunglasses. This is a sweet unit for sure.

Im running navionics. Always been spot on and happy with the detail my chip is a few years old from my last locator but it has all the lakes and rivers I run.
