Jay builds a fine boat. You'll be pleased.

If you had an instagator and a 23, Jay will probably recommend a 16.5 x 46. I'd listen to him too! Real helpful guy he is, just busy.

I got a 1744 with a 23 stage 2 not an instagator but runs 27 solo and 22/24 with 2 guys dog and gear if I did it over I would go a little wider 46/48. Stock it ran low 20s solo. I would rather go a little slower and have extra width for stability and room while fishing. I think you would be fine with a 48

With a smaller engine and boat, weight savings can be a pretty decent performance advantage. It all adds up. The 2 inches over 17 feet is only about 5 pounds, but there are other factors that come into play too - such as the surface area in contact with the water.
