What motor would you guys think would be best for the type of boat I'm running? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm in between a SWOMP 27 (longtail) or MudBuddy 27 mini. Not sure which would be the best for the modified v.

That's going to depend on the transom on your boat. If the mod-v runs all the way back to the stern, the long tail would probly perform better, but longtails usually prefer a narrower bottom. If the back is flat across the floor, the SD would perform better. Tighter turning and better speeds. Just my opinion tho.

Ya, I have a 16" transom also I have a slight v at the rear(it's almost unnoticeable but it's there). I might just go the sd way and get me a mud buddy. Any recomendations between the 23 or the 27? As far as mods go? I don't wanna dump that much money off the bat.

Go ahead and get a 35/37hp version of whatever you're wanting... You'll be replacing that hull in short order most likely and probably end up in something bigger. Then you wouldn't have to buy your motor twice.

That's what I was thinking about. But you guys think it won't be too much weight on the rear for the 16" transom on a 1546?

If you go the 35/37 route, it would be best if you get the transom reinforced and built up to a tall transom. Or if you don't see yourself buying another boat, get a hunt deck installed. Weight distribution is going to be you key factor in how that mod v boat performs.

Have you guys heard anything about those copperhead 23 hp motors? 27 mph out of a 15 foot boat with two guys... That sound right? Lol What's the difference between a mud buddy 23 and a copperhead 23? other than the neutral?

I don't think I wanna go the 35 route just cause beefing up the transom isn't really in my agenda. I'm in the military and have two years left here at home then I'm going wherever the send me. Just want a motor that can fit this boat and perform well. I'm gonna end up letting my dad and brother use the boat when I'm gone in a couple years.

I'm purely speculating here, but I think the copperhead isn't as heavy, primarily due to the difference in framework. I'm running a 31 GT (260 lbs) on a 1648 flat jon with a 16 inch transom. It was already reinforced when I got it with 1" stainless tubes running from the side boards above the rear seat to the transon on each side of the motor. It's solid as a rock. I'm only 2" wider and a foot longer, but with my weight distributed up front, it doesn't squat too bad. I've never had water over the transom, but I always slow down in plenty time to prevent that out of caution. My motor is almost the same weight as a 35/37 GTR. I'm told the weight difference between them isn't enough to worry about.

If they're claiming high 20's out of a 23 with two people they're talking about a fairly light boat purpose built for that motor in very shallow water. I'm not saying it's impossible because I've seen it personally. But on a boat like what you're describing expect low 20's. Maybe high 20's solo with a light boat.

I tried to run a MB 27mini on a waterfowler 15. Which is very similar to what you have. Was fine with just me and the dog. Add another guy and it fell right on it's face, like 7-8 mph. Could never get a 2 man load on step.

If your married to the boat, then I'd go longtail.

I'd go with a JB Mud Motor 28hp efi. Can't beat the price and the customs service is awesome.

May be a little late on this reply but I run a stock MB 27 mini on an Alumacraft 1546MV. Had to install pods due to motor weight and short transom but it runs 26 mph just me, 2 people with duck load, 21-22 all in deep water.

I run a Moded MB BD 45 on a 1648 Alumacraft . With no problems, but I moved my rear seat forward 16" for better weight distribution. Runs in the mid thirtys.
