Looking to get an outboard to swap out with my PD. I read a few threads on swap outs and seen that for my size hull, 17'6" x 48, most were putting a 60 - 75 on it. My options are limited to either 4 stroke (depending on price) and an oil injected 2 stroke. Reason is I don't want to have to build another tank for my hull. Keep running premium fuel, and had the engine oil injection or 4 stroke. So for those that swap out, what are you doing about the fuel tank and any particular engines youy recommend? haven't had a tiller outboard since 1991 and it was a 40 merc. been running 200-225 on my bass hulls so been out of the loop on the tillers. |

The 4 stroke Yammies aren't speed demons but are extremely reliable, quiet, and fuel efficient. I have ran them from 15-150hp on various boats and have been impressed with every one. I'm also interested in the new Evinrude's also since BRP is making the engines. Should be a very good product. |

Great question. I've been wondering the same thing and am always digging through classified looking for a good deal on a out board. It's hard to find a tiller, most are console controlled. My browsing tells me Ill likely buy a console model and swap to a tiller to get a good deal. I'll be following this, and contribute anything else I find. |

Go read on salty Cajun about the 40 tohatsu 4 stroke.. Remove restrict or plate on it and its 50hp.. Fella on there did some extensive testing with it in swla.. Long story short, he took off his merc 40 that he ran forever and replaced it with the tohatsu.. If you want more info I'll find the thread Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I think westendangler has a 50 and swaps his out. I did look at that engine (the 50 though, not the 40) and I'm just looking for something that will be at or more than my PD. My PD pushes my hull 33-34, 30+ loaded down. I don't want to loose any performance. Also, I have been using mine to pull the kids on a tube. I've had 2 on the tube, 2 in the boat along with me and it will pull em about 25mph. But I believe it too much of a strain on the motor with that many kids. So even If I go bigger, I'd have the extra power if needed. But if the 50 will suffice, then I'm all ears. |

I swap from a yamaha tiller 90 to my gtr. The yamaha has the oil injection tank built into it so i dont have to worry about mixing my gas or running a separate tank at all. |

I swap out between my pd and a 90 merc w/ tiller. motor is a old 2-stroke, but has oil injection, so all I have to do is bolt it on and hook up the battery and fuel line. if I take my time it takes less than a hr to swap engines. if I were setup with a good a-frame it would take 15 min. a 40/50 tohatsu, the 70 Yamaha, the 60 merc or 60 Honda would all be a good choice for a motor to swap. a good jackplate is also the way to go. |

yamaha, merc, or honda 4 stroke. honda has 5 year warranty and low interest financing. I hear the new merc 115 proXS 4 stroke is bad ass |

Anyone can have low interest financing if you have good credit, don't let that be a deciding factor. |

Do you save on taxes by buying out of state? I know atv's have to be registered so taxes need to be paid in order to get registration and title. How does this work with outboards? |

A bunch of buddies here in TX use to drive to LA to to buy their ATV's and avoid state sales tax. That's changed now I do believe. I guess this doesn't really help you, but the same principle that applied to those purchases should apply to an outboard. I believe the window has closed though, but I'll ask my wife what she knows this evening (CPA). |

I have had new Suzuki four stroke for 3 years. First of all they are twice the size of the 2 strokes! You will find they are workhorses! They will not run like 2 stroke! The props they sell on them are junk! The upside is fuel consumption is incredible! You can run forever on a tank of fuel! So if you have a large tank in your boat you will not empty it like you would on a 2 stroke! The plus is whether you put it on small boat or big boat loaded or unloaded your top speed is almost no difference, like I said they are workhorses! 25 Suzuki 14 pitch prop pushes prodrive 16x60 crawfish model boat with 2 people, nets, bait, dog, 12 gallon fuel tank 26 miles per hour upriver! This boat is really heavy motor should barely run it but it pops it up and goes was going to put a 50 I have but was in a hurry and put the 25 on it to try it. Never put the 50 on because fuel economy was unreal! So you may not need as big a motor as you think! |

I swap out my 50HP Tohatsu with the MM all the time. I wish I had gone 60 HP maybe 70 HP (different brand motor) but I was on a budget and got a great deal. I've been happy with the Tohatsu. I run premium gas in my tank and the MM and Outboard drink from the same tank. |

Look at the 4" detailer. That's what a few of my friends have. Pump is on the plate and is rated for 300hp |
