Post subject:  First trip to Everglades
Hello y'all, what advice do you have for someone wanting to take his first trip to the Florida Everglades. My cousin and I will be coming from Alabama and bringing my Excel 17/54. We're going for sight seeing and picture taking. We'll be primitive camping. I'd like to hammock camp if it's allowed. We'll probably be going in late January.

Any better areas to see? Better boat ramps to use? Camping areas?

not sure about camping mostly do it on the levees or at the ramp because they are the only dry places

I have lived about 2.5 hours from the Everglades for 45 years and have only been once. I could point you in the right direction on Lake Okeechobee though. Very little camping on the lake other than a few spoil islands.

I just got the Jan/Feb edition of Florida Sport Fishing and it has a good Everglades article with camping, map, etc.

Check out.. Mack's Fish Camp, Markham Park, Sawgrass Recreation or Holiday Park ... Most of those places will suit your needs .. might even shoot a few ducks too?

You need to be much more specific. "Everglades" essentially defines the wetlands south of Lake Okeechobee all the way south/Southwest to where the fresh water rivers dump into Florida Bay to the South, where the "Keys" begin, and to the southwest, into the Gulf of Mexico.

That's an absolutely massive area that starts out with bass and bluegill and alligators and freshwater, all the way into saltwater where you can catch permit, speckled seatrout, redfish, snook, tarpon, etc. and find the last population of American crocodiles.

I spend a lot of time in both---the "freshwater" glades west of Dade and Broward counties, and the estuaries at Chokoloskee to the southwest and Flamingo to the south. Let me know where you anticipate traveling to and I can be of more help.

The article in florida sportsmen is particularly talking about a saltwater area called 'flamingo' no hunting only fishing very cool though but VERY VERY easy to get lost there
Many many mangrove islands and all looks the same but there is camping on beach and on little chickee huts built on docks lots of cool stuff to see but again even locals respect the area very much. No cell phone reception and if you get out to open water out of the rivers and bays itll get choppy. Plan thoroughly take redundant gps's and give someone and stick to a float plan
