I'm seriously considering putting a surface drive on my 1446 express db. I've had a 18' gator trax with a long tail couple years ago but it was just to much boat for what I need. My question is what size and brand motor do y'all recommend. I definitely need reverse. Would I need pods? I have basically no experience with this type of rig. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope I put this in right forum.

Since you need reverse you will spend the money on the motor. A small block Gatortail or pd might be the answer. As far as the boat, its a little small but will probably get it done. Buy a motor and try it. Try to avoid the pod route if possible. worst case you will need a little more boat but at least the motor will be paid for. Let us know what you come up with, good luck and welcome to mmt

Giga your probably right. A 46 has a little more ass than than my boat so i was thinking it would float it. Soo get insurance before you run it :D

I'll second a no-go on the 14' for a heavy surface drive. The 25efi Prodrive weighs 260lb. You'll be so ass heavy sitting back there that you'll move slow with just you and it will be impossible to use reverse without swamping your boat. You might be able to get by with one of the lighter copperheads, but I would suggest selling your 1446 for something more substantial if you definitely want a surface drive.

If you want to keep that boat, I would look into the Backwater SWOMP Lite series long tails.

CopperHead motor maybe? For a 14 ft. boat.

Unless your life just won't be complete until you own a surface drive, I would look for 15-25HP outboard.

For reference I have a 1546 welded with a 27 MB mini (200lb) and I needed pods...would swamp transom (15") when coming off throttle. I like them...come in handy getting in and out of boat.
