FNG, new to the forums. I've been running a Godevil long tail for several years on a 14' flat bottom and I want to switch to something a bit easier to handle. I'm looking for some feedback on a Godevil 40 FNR on either an 1856 or a 2056 Godevil boat. I've outgrown the short boat and I have grandkids that will be hunting soon. I'm planning for the future needs, hence the bigger boat. I don't want to have to turn a 20' boat with a long tail. Seems like that turning radius could be a bitch.

Most of my runs are short and the water is typically deep with a few shallow muddy areas. Never in mud with a hard bottom. Worst case for me is grinding through thick nutgrass or cattails.

I would like to be able to fish (troll) out of the new rig and I'm thinking a long tail wouldn't be the best motor for that.

I'm looking for feedback from anyone that is in a similar situation as I am in with water conditions. And if you fish with a surface drive any comments on that would be appreciated as well.

I have a 2060 GDSD boat with the 37 efi. Been wondering myself how the 40 fnr would perform on my boat. I expect that the increased power would be noticeable and also would get better speed. And reverse would also help a lot with maneuvering that big boat. What I expect would not change is that big boat would still be difficult to handle in situations with a heavy load that requires lots of maneuvers, and long runs with a cross wind and a chop. I am looking at switching instead to the Bosss 40 with the anti torque tiller handle. I have heard that it will handle great in those type situations.

But for short runs runs and some vegetation, I think the GDSD 40 fnr would work great.

CDG,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not stuck on that hull size. My goal is to have as much room as possible as the grandkids are ready to tag along with one about ready to shoot. Typically it's just me and my two boys. That GD 1654 would probably do just fine.

I'm not sure what a heavy load is for a hull that size. Between me and my two boys, we're about a total of 450 lbs between us. My dog weighs in at a lean 80lbs. We keep about three dozen decoys in the boat so I would estimate we will be under 750lbs including the blind and gear.

We don't have any trees or structure to dodge, no submerged stumps, no rocks and not a lot of maneuvering to do. In drought years we may have to plow through some mud to get where we like to hunt. Usually we see anywhere from 6" to 2' of water.

Recently I went out with three adults, two teenagers, shotguns, two decoy sacks, a pirogue, boat blind (one tank of gas, two batteries, poling platform, and other typical necessities) and it was a noticeable load. Made maneuvering some twisting ditches difficult.

You should be fine with the situations that you described. Reach out and I can tell you what I did with my boat, what I've learned, and what I would do different.

Trust a guy who has had 14-24 foot boats. Don't go any less than 18 man. With that 40
It will plane out better, carry a load better, and give y'all that extra room. My 18x48 is comfortable with 3 or 4 people and my dog with all our gear

I agree with Wchauvin and forgot to say it - go with at least an 18 ft.

Post subject:  Re: Godevil 40 FNR

I just noticed in one post above I said 1654 would be fine. That's a typo - should have been 1854.

I've kicked around the idea of an 18' hull because today it would work just fine with four hunters and my dog. But I don't want to be crowded when another grandkid joins the group. They get bigger every year and I don't want to regret the 18' hull five years from now.

I'm pretty well set on the 20' with that 40 FNR but I'll need to take a ride in that boat and see how it handles. Right now that 20' hull seems like way too much boat, but once I factor in a growing family it seems like we might just outgrow it. If that happens, my kids can get their own boat!

If you plan on bringing that many people then the 20 footer is a no brainer bro, get the big one lol

Right? Sometimes I waffle a bit making decisions. Clearly.

I still only 90% on the FNR motor. I have a bit of long tail compulsive disorder nagging me.

With a boat that size, get you a surface drive with reverse man, again, you won't regret it. I don't even use my long tail rig anymore since I got used to my GTR lol another no brainer lol

I run a 20x60 pro drive and love it for when we take the nephews out that being said one refers to it as a party barge and the other calls it a battle tank. Once you get used to maneuvering the 20 they are great only problem to keep an eye out for is when you got more boat you tend to want to bring more stuff. But for the loads your describing I would imagine you would be happy with a 20’ and reverse is a godsend every now and again for making things easier.

yep, get the 20'. boats get small quick. anything shorter than 18' is a waste of time/money if you load the boat down a lot.

I just bought (two weeks ago) the 1856GD w/35FNR. Tops out about 25mph. And with 3 adults and 3 kids it runs about 22. We ran about 20mes on half a stank of gas. Boat runs great, so there’s no doubt that the 40FNR won’t run even better

I run an 18 footer with a modded 36 hp mud motor and I would tell you to go no smaller in a boat. There are many times where we haul the spread of death (two layout blinds, dog, 5-6 dz duck decoys, 2+ dz goose decoys and a couple of spinners) and it gets tight. You may not always have to bring that much to a hunt but you know what they say...better to have and not need than need and not have.

ive owned a 1236, then 1536, then 1754 and now a 2060 with a modded 35hp GT. The 2060 is by far the way to go for multi purpose use. I have mine set up with a removable bowfishing insert, bass fishing and duck hunting. Empty ill roll 33mph and LOADED down with 3 guys, bowfishing platform and 2 55gal drums full of fish ill get on plane and roll 18mph. (takes a bit to get on plane tho).

I do wish I had reverse for some dockside maneuvering and backing off the trailer.

A 20' boat and the most hp you can hang on the back of it is the way to roll if you like to run loaded. I had an 1860/37 GD package and loved it but will be going bigger (longer) next time.

Bringing this one back to the around. Although I started out looking at a 40 FNR SD, I ended up staying true to my roots and getting a LT for this build. For what I do and where I hunt, the SD wasn't the best choice for me.

Coco offers a 20' non-flotation boat today and I ordered one in a 2048. As I mentioned, I stayed with the LT. I'm hanging the Vanguard EFI 40HP off the back. I'll be taking delivery of the boat next Saturday. Looking forward to getting the boat muddy!
