Have a 16x44 go devil hull. It had a 25hp longtail on it. I hated the longtail thing and tried to sell the whole rig. Someone bought the motor but I’m not having luck selling the boat which I’m not upset over.
Anyways I’m thinking of putting a GTR 25efi short transom (boat transom is 16”) on it. I’d go 35hp but I think the weight is too much for the boat. I think it would squat in the back.
Question is what kind of performance difference can I expect going to the GTR25 compared to the longtail? Just trying to avoid making a bad choice for the second time.

The weight is almost the same.

I’d have a fab shop make it a tall transom and get a 35 hp.

I have a 1644 alweld. When I bought it it had a stock 35 on it. Many said it would be a dog. That was true in rare Circumstances. The only time it struggled to plain out was with three large guys a big dog and a hunt load.

However, 95% of the time I use this boat is with smaller loads than that. I could easily plain out with three guys and no hunt load. It would plain out with four guys and no load as well.

Most of the time I hunt it is with me one other guy and my dog. Boat performs great in that situation.

I did end up working the heads, adding a Mikuni and performance exhaust. Now I have not had a load I cannot plane out. I did not do this work because I had to. I just enjoy working on the boat.

I guess the bottom line is it all depends on how you plan to use the boat.
