 rev limiter/governor questions
after reading a few reviews i kinda been feeling like maybe im not getting what i can out of my motor. in water, i can only turn up about thirty six hundred rpms. out of water idle is about 1250. i slowly increased the throttle to see the max rpms out of water and i noticed at about thirty six to thirty eight hundred rpms it seems like the motor is bouncing. i figured it may be the rev limiter. out of water max is 4100rpms. do i have any room to play here? i would like to turn 38 to 39 hundred in water. if it is indeed the limiter, is it adjustable at all? any help or insight would be appreciated guys

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
If its a stock carb, its just the gov, you don't have a rev limiter. Well unless its a cdi. Why don't you tell us what your running first.
I'm thinking you just need to bump up the gov a lil bit. There is a good pic on this site somewhere that shows all the linkage. DB8 posted it a few times and I think Craig has put it a few places too.

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
You should be able to turn your governor up to about 4200 out of water. Its on the back near the carb. There's a screw to adjust it up or down. Lemme see if I can locate that pic.
Sorry just watched the video. Looks like your oow rpms are already just over 4000. If you can't turn that in the water its not because of the governor.
How many hours on the motor?

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
does anyone see anything wrong in the video? is that the governor that it's bumping at 3800? it gets real rough and starts bouncing all over. do u think this is why i cant turn more than thirty six in the water?

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
Does it bounce like that in the water? It will do that on the trailer without a load

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
no it doesnt bounce like that in the water. it gets on step, i trim all the way up and trim maxed out it usually turns thirty five fifty to thirty six but @ 24 to 25 mph. that is what makes me feel something is off. just dont know a lot about the motor to diagnose it. it could just be me commin from my last gtr that ran 34mph all day long, but i doubt it. i dont expect thirtys, but 27 to 29 would be great, every review i read with the same combo as me is running that
im running the middle whole. it seems as if prop is half out the water. not sure if the top hole will help but ima try it when i get time. i made a post askin if anyone ran top hole, no one replied so i guess middle hole is the place to be. ...anyone have ideas?

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
I'm thinking changing the holes is worth a shot. If you are trimming it up as high as you can and can't get peak performance out of it, you may need to get it up a lil higher. I think wea runs his in the top hole. I seem to remember the other day him saying he had to drop it back down when they were riding in the mud, but for normal riding he runs it in the top position.
Too much prop in the water will def keep the rpms down. Hopefully that fixes it. Seems like your motor is running the way it should as far as planing out, and the gov seems to be working properly. Hope its just something simple to get you where you want to be.

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
If you can trim your motor up until your rpms come up and your speed drops then running in the top hole will not help all that much. I ran a motor in the top hole but ran just as good in the middle. All you can do is set your OOW rpms at 4200 and thats all you are going to get out of her.

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
Tried it in the top hole this morning on the way back from fishing. It was just me, a trolling motor, 12 gal gas I ran 25.5 middle hole. 26.5 top hole. Turned 3700 then prop blew out. I am able to turn 4k n top hole. Think I should get my prop worked on?

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
Have you been running in sand? Thats the only thing I could figure would eat a prop that fast.
Only 36 hours on the motor, I'm assuming its under warranty? May try to get one of the GT boys to take a look at it.

 Re: rev limiter/governor questions
When you stab the throttle quickly the the engine revvs way faster than the tach can read (2 second delay). So that means you are spinning more RPMS than the tach is showing. If you gradually get int he throttle and keep revving it up slowly you can get a better Idea of how the tach reads and gradually get up to RPMs to check the Neutral RPM's 4250 is good for a stock motor. MY governer had changed setting (vibrations unscrewed the GOV adjust screw a tad bit and i was Getting 3750 is empty. Checked the neutral RPMs and they were only at 4100 ish. I turned it back to 4250 and I gained my extra 100 RPMS back in the water. This was all when the engine was stock.
