F Y I
I just wanted to put this out there for you guys.
The other day I noticed my engine ( GTR 35 w/ cam, heads, carb work and 235hrs ) felt a lil slugish getting out the hole and when i was in the thick sheet. When I got it home i did a leak down on the cylinders and found my intake valves were leaking. I took the engine down and lapped the valves. When I got it in the water It was a night and day difference. I didnt realize how much power I had lost.
So any way i just wanted to share that with everybody. Its something to think about if anyone as noticed a power loss

Re: F Y I
no rpm loss just low end power lost.
It dosent matter who did the heads, Its a 3600 rpm engine turning 1000rpms over its desigened rpm range with stock valves. Something has to give ya know. This kind of thing is not uncommon when getting more HP out of a engine than what was intended. It was no ones fault, it wasnt the person who done the heads, it just happens. Im just a mechanic by trade who knew whaqt to look for with access to good test tools, thats all. I just want this info to help someone else if needed. And Im not saying that this will happen to every engine!!!!!
abouot 200 hard hours on the heads.
It dosent surprise at all. I have to change the valves in my four wheeler every 100 hours for the same reason. but it turns 11,000 rpms.

Re: F Y I
A leak down test is when you check how much leakage you have in a cylinder. Its a tool thats preasures up the cylinder while the valves are closed and at the same time it tells you a percentage of how much of the volume of air is getting out the cylinder. If the percentage is low like 15-20% your good. Mine were both around 60% and you could hear the air blowing out the intake manifold at a high rate while doing the test. Inturn telling me it was the intake valves leaking. You can not do the test without a leak down tester, the proper connectors and a air compressor.
The leak down will tell you if you valves are bad or if your rings/cylinder are bad.
