Post Not getting spark
Motor will turn over but won't fire off.

Getting plenty of fuel no problem

Changed spark plugs

Checked the plug wire with screwdriver from plug wire to motor and no spark on one side but tiny bit on other side.

Haven't taken the cowling off to look yet just tryin to figure out what it could be

Thanks in advance

It also cranked fine Friday but did notice it would act up when getting on the gas for take off but just thought that was carb issue

Would that have anything to do with ignition/spark problems?

You can check/eliminate the harness as a cause by taking off the cowling and disconnecting the spade connectors at the coils. You can then check spark on each side and then start the motor. If you have good spark and the motor starts, its the harness grounding out the coils. NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE MOTOR OFF WITH THE KEY OR KILL SWITCH (with the coil connections off)- choke it out or take off the spark plug wires to kill it (wear a glove). Depending on your motor there are several things that can ground the harness- kill switch, oil pressure switch, bad harness (insulation chaffed or bad diodes).

Dude, mine done the same to me on friday while out scouting, thought it was going to be a cold long wait for someone to get me. called a buddy and he told me to check rev limiter and shure enough two min latter i was on the prowl. unhook the green wire from the revlimiter if you have one and wire nut the engine side back off that should do you. Thats if you have a rev limiter on your engine. good luck with it.

Post Re: Not getting spark
well i did what gary said then said what the heck ill try the rev limiter thing....i cut the green wire and bam started right up with the spade connectors on the coils

I couldnt turn the motor off but thats probably because all of my grounds were unhooked since the cowling is off

I'm gonna put everything back together and see if thats actually the problem

Or since I have it off and apart is it a good idea to go ahead and replace the coils and all that? or just wait til those actually go out?

SOrry, didn't know you had a rev limiter on it. I would always put a spade connector on the green wire to eliminate the rev limiter quickly if there was a problem. Something was grounding your coils (on a Briggs there is lots that hang off that circuit- Key switch (to turn off), Kill Switch, oil pressure solenoid (if installed), Rev Limiter (if installed)). Sounds like you found the source.

I install rev limiters in the rear box to protect them (just extend the wires).
