I thought stock bottom was 49. I would run it and see if your hitting your rev limiter. If you are the 48 will bring you down a couple hundred rpms

Maybe you mean - less gear reduction or "taller gearing" if you want
more speed - or more gear reduction or "lower gearing" if you want
more power out of the hole....

Well to quote DB.... See pasted quote below....

Here's the MB Gear Ratios- Top gear/Bottom Gear - Ratio:
Stock 35- 38/50 - 1.31 to 1
45 Mag- 38/48 - 1.26 to 1
7000- 40/46 - 1.15 to 1 (first models had 38/46 - 1.21 to 1)

They offer 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 52 tooth lower gears to adjust performance and RPM for specific setups. Changing the bottom gear is easiest. Usually if you choose to change a top gear you would change the clutch at the same time. You just have to select specific ratio for the setup and prop

correct i figured with the everything ive done to the motor it should be around the same as the 45 mag so i was going to go with a 48 on bottom.

Adjusting the gear ratio is done to adjust/control RPM. Selecting the ratio depends on the RPM you are running now and the target RPM you are trying to achieve. A mikuni and exhaust will not make it run with a 45mag, especially under load. In general the higher ratio, the better hole shot.
