 Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
I'm thinking about about gutting the exhaust on my 35 and was wanting some pros and cons of doing so. I ordered a new stock muffler, so I will be installing it reguardless.
I was really just wondering what would be the best way to go about it.
I also plan to apply a ceramic coating once it's completed.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
If its a horizontal muffler, I always took a cut off wheel, sliced around the end cap crimps, about an 1/8" in from the outside edge.......gave the easiest surface to reweld. Pounded out the baffle tube that goes between sides, cut 2" holes in each baffle, then changed the exit tube to 1 3/4" or you can just cut off the end cap of the exit tube...... I found that changing the exit tube and placing it a certain distance from the back side of the muffler, could help reduce backfiring, that you'll likely get when just gutting the stock mufflers. I did 6 stock muffler I had, and reworked/changed those around quite a bit. Don't waste the money on a ceramic coating, they rust just the same.......save the $ for a stainless deal from one of the manufacturers.

I have EVT's muffler and like it! Their lifetime warrenty sold me on it. Only got 150 hrs out of the stock muffler before it broke. I was going to fab one for less money but the guru's on here talked me out of it....Im glad they did!

Thanks
I'll probably just put the new stock muffler on to get me through next season and go stainless.
I appreciate the comments though!

Don't waste your money ceramic coating it.. It won't last.. Just use Rustoleum grill paint.. Trust me

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
Just gut the old can and insert 3" pipe to 1/2 inch from back and weld a plate around the pipe for suport. Great sound wit no backfires and more flow for way cheaper got 20 somethin hrs on mine and no cracks Just wire brush and paint wit BBQ paint a couple times a year and it will last

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
Hey Jim, I got it opened up! gutting was easy do to everything just flopping around in there, must of been one hell of a backfire! lol
Now when you say a 1/2 " from the back I take it you mean slide the exhaust tube (with a straight cut) all the way in untill it touches the back then slide it out a 1/2" correct? rather than form fitting the exhaust tube to match the conture of the back the can and then pull it out a 1/2". seems you would get a little more flow with the straight cut rather than the contured one. But is there a such thing as to much flow? Just want to get it right the first time myboy.

Preston be careful that you are not running to Lean with the stock carb. Should not be in issue with Mikuni but it would suck to burn something up because of lean burn.

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
I checked mine yesterday and they appear to be on the lean side according to the sparkplug scale I used. there a little black around the threads but the ceramic around the electrode is a white to grayish. the scale shows an amber/rusty color the be the best . But, thats yesterdays plugs, I have the new carb on, so I'll run some new plugs and see where I stand now.

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
Check your RPM's first, If ur over 4000 go to the hopkins 12x14 wit no tip curl and u will get max speed and keep ur old prop to grind in the sand I went wit a 12x13 wit tip curl cause I'm still stock that prop will turn 4ooo in deep and has a great hookup I keep my old re-cupped PD prop to grind in the sand

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
Now that I am doing mods, I am curious about the Hopkins props. I am running around 4150-4300 with a fishing load. This is with only a Mikuni carb. I will be getting exhaust shortly. I am looking for a prop with a little more speed for fishing, no real mud use. Would a Hopkins help in this situation and by how much?

Re: Gutting Exhaust on 35 Briggs!!!
Wilson, your'e boat may be a little different cause of it's size but a 12x14 will prolly be a bit much for just a carb.
Add heads and a exhaust and it should add speed, just be sure to order it wit no tip curl
