 location for a fuel/water seperator

Post location for a fuel/water seperator
I want to put this on the boat this weekend... I have seen them on the transome but was wondering if you could put it up under the deck by the fuel tank... ? I have a 9ft deck so this would be about mid ship... kind of like having it out of the elements...
