Post head work question
I am going to have a local performance shop do my heads. Port, polish , improve flow of stock valves and deck the heads 45 thou. My question is how much do I need to shim my stock valve springs. I also have the mikuni carb, performance exhaust and rev box. Also where do I get or what do I use for shims. I am new to working on motors but I enjoy tinkering and learning.

Thanks

I have a GTR so I don't spend any time on the MB forum. I read this forum 3 or 4 times a week but I don't post very much. Thanks for the warning though.

You can get the shims on-line - Kart Sites or maybe Extreme V twins. The local performance shop may have them if you tell them how thick (not sure of the specs)

I just can't believe that with all the gear heads on here no one can answer my question. Is shimming valves that big of a secret or does no one really know.

im going to get some heads done when i get back from vacation and for 75 bucks i figure just go with the dual wound springs especially if your the type thats never satisfied you never know if youll push it to stage 2 or 3. when mine are off im going to just do push rods, rockers, and springs so i dont have to disassemble again later.

I decked my heads thirty thousands, and smimmed my valve springs the same amount, although I've been told the numbers don't always correlate like that. One of the Kohler mod guys told me not to worry about it unless I was going over 4800 rpm's. However, I did shim them a little because I lapped them in.

Go to ace hdw with your valve spring go to the bolt section
look for sae mach bushings stack 2 thin washers per spring
that will set you good for 4500 rpm no prob
