A few benefits when running higher ratio roller rockers.

The ratio of a rocker arm refers to the amount of movement on the valve side of the rocker arm in comparison to the pushrod side. A 1.3:1 rocker arm will move a valve 1.3 times the lift of the cam. If your cam has a lobe lift of .300 inches, multiply by 1.3 to get .390 inches of actual valve lift. With the same cam lift of .300 inches: If you do the math on a set of 1.5 rocker arms: Multiply 1.5 x .300 inches of lobe lift. You get .450 inches of actual valve lift. Essentially, changing to a larger ratio rocker arm is the same as increasing the valve lift and duration of your cam. The larger ratio makes the engine think the cam is larger than it really is. Opening both valves further and holding them open longer usually is a benefit in the power department as your engine is capable of moving more air and exhaust through it.

The moment of inertia is the rocker's resistance to rotation. The higher this measurement, the more valve spring pressure it takes to control the rocker arm instead of the valves - losing rpm and horsepower. The moment of inertia is lowered by lightening the rocker arm's weight, particularly at areas that are farther from the trunion. Two ways you can do this are by switching to a lighter weight material or by removing mass from the rocker body design.

I don't see any reason why you would HAVE to run the aftermarket roller rockers with any performance cam, BUT if you want to get the full potential from the cam you should.

I believe the stock stamped steel 35 rockers have a 1.3 rocker ratio where the roller tip aluminum BPS have a 1.5 ratio.

That's what I thought, most were running without and save $300. I just put a pd together and went with the bps cam and stock rockers and it seems to run just fine.

thx

Nobody is worried about running a welded Cam? Just a question, and not meant to be a loaded one either...It is a concern of mine...

deadbird, if put on a dyno, the engine using the aftermarket rockers will produce more power....but barely. Against the advice of Hoyt, bjg, and gator guy, all of whom have built MANY of these engines, I tried them. For about an hour.

Most people want to be able to actually see the difference these parts make. Convincing people to spend $300.00 on a part that cost approx. $50-100 to make, and provides no actual 'noticeable' gain, and only provides an increase of a fraction of a fraction of horsepower is insane to me. But that's me.
