 Inconsistant Spark plug
Apparently my spark plug wire likes to fire when ever it likes to. I discovered this by pulling off the other one and the damn engine died.
After taking it apart and messing around with both spark plug wires it is the one on the starter side. It does have rust on it unlike the other side, but if i pull the boot off it seems to arc pretty consistent. so after putting the boot back on and firing the engine i went ahead revved the engine up and started to try diagnosing it when it goes out. Seems like it has to be in a perfect spot to keep a steady enough fire to run the engine if i pull the other spark plug. And i can defiantly hear a difference when its firing right.
I looked for spots where it could be grounding out but with no luck i even made sure the whole wire was suspended no where near a grounding spot and still acted up. So what im thinking is maybe the rust is causes it, but apparently i cant just change the plug because it molds into that control box that grounds it when the kill switch gets activated.
So the question would be do i just order the whole new assembly or can i take the metal clip at the end off clean the wire up real good and re crimp it? Sorry such a long post just trying to knock out some questions. Thanks for any help.

Us knowing what the motor is may help you.

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Try setting the gap on your coils. Mine runs on one cylinder at idle am then rev it up and they both fire set the gap and everything was fine

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
The thing the sparkplug wire leads to, right by the flywheel.
I'm not sure on the exact gap for a 35 vanguard, maybe somebody will chime in.

^^^^^Motors are the same for all manufacturers whether it be mudbuddy, gator-tail, go-devil, and prodrive etc., gap can be set the same!

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
set de gap wit a business card! make sure u set it on de magnet, not just de Fwheel. u'r #1 cylinder will carry de engine, u'r #2 won't... runs fine wit NO load, but won't do chit in de water! might wanna check u'r flywheel key also

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Ive never heard of a buisness card, I'll have to try that.
The fastest way to set it is to loosen the bolts, set the card under the "box" and turn the motor over by hand until the magnet gets to it, it will pull the coil onto it. Tighten the bolts then pull the card or whatever you set it with out and there you have it.

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Like Coon said, the business card over the magnet is a Good way to set the air gap from the coil/flywheel. Is the contacts are rusty, clean them with a touch of emery cloth on the coil and the flywheel magnet to see if that helps.

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Thanks for the input.
New to these motors, so excuse the terminology and retardeness.
Gonna work on it some more today. If you use oem plugs you shouldn't need to gap them right?

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Always check the gap. They get banged around pretty good in shipping and are rarely correct.

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
Gap range on the coils for a 35 is 0.005-0.007. If you set the gap on the flywheel @ 0.005, when you turn it to the magnet gap will be 0.006 or 0.007. Watch the torque on the coil bolts, you can twist off the heads easily.

 Re: Inconsistant Spark plug
check gap on both the coils and spark plugs: at idle i cant pull the port side plug (assuming thats cylinder 2 being it wont run at idle) now if i rev it up and pull the starboard side ( number 2?) it bogs down heavy heavy but will still run, obviously like shit though.
Both sides are firing strong and the same if i arc them over to a ground btw
Back to idle with both plugs, ill pull #2 and you cant hear hint of noise or see an rpm drop, put that one back in pull #1 motor will die.
To me its weird because i have my tach meter hooked up on the #2 spark plug wire (starter side, port side etc) and seems to be reporting the way any others do.
another note to maybe help diagnose things, the #1 cylinder exhaust outlet gets way hotter than the #2 exhaust outlet.
i still run the same mph, with a load and with out, just really aggravating me because this cant be right
any further help greatly appreciated
