Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
Just change my fuel line to one that handles ethanol. I normally run a fuel filter and a water seperater.. Question is do I really need the fuel filter since I have the water/ fuel seperater

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
I run both. A Racor is first before the electric fuel pump, then a Moeller inline filter just before the carb. I figure if I dislodge some trash, while servicing the Racor, or the electric fuel pump self destructs sending trash down the line, the inline filter is the last line of defense. The outboard mfgs do something similar with a strainer built into the engine.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
The industry standard for a filter is one that captures particals down to 10 microns in size (which 10 microns is about 1/10 the size of a grain of sand)...........The only negative thing that I see here in regards to aftermarket filters is that they do a pretty piss poor job of painting their filters and they tend to rust out very quickly, where as the OEM (merc, yamaha, evinrude, etc) tend to last alot longer. But other than that they are all basicall the same thing.
As far as ethanol, there is no such filter made that does anything at all if you use ethanol blended fuel. A filter just filters out particles, and in the case of the one you mentioned it also traps trace amounts of water that got into the gas tank.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
just learned from my local gas station that all suppliers of gasoline must be converted to ethanol by the end of this month, so fill up while you can. Imma gonna see about AV fuel supplier if I can find one.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
Just contacted Lafayette Regional Airport....if it ain't a plane you can't buy AV gas. Peclian Aviation in New Iberia will sell it to you but only if you show up with a 50 gallon container. The airport in Jeanerette has a self service AV gas dispenser and you can fill up with as little as you want with a credit card and its much cheaper than at Pelican which is $6.30 per gallon.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
I just meant went not using the boat. Thinking that with the vent open it's constantly open to the air and can suck up moisture. I'm guessing these new click valves work by letting air in only when the motor is pulling fuel.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
u can run both filters won't hurt a thing. ethanol has a 90 plus day shelf life in a good container. the new epa fuel cells have a built in relief valve that vent at 5 psi. the only way they deliever fuel is if a vacuum is pulled on it. if u are having problems with carb over flow u have a bad needle seat combination or a misadjusted float level. it takes alot more than 5 psi. or a fuel tank that is not vented to pop off the needle in the seat.

Re: Do I need a fuel filter if I have water/fuel seperater
You can not rely on the epa rated relief valves. They do not consistently relieve the pressure. Your tank can pressurize and force fuel into your engine. I had a new carb rebuilt once, re-jetted, and two needle valves replaced, trying to stop fuel from getting into the crankcase.
Installed a fuel shut-off and shut-off the fuel whenever the motor isn't running (at the recommendation of a MMT member). Problem solved. No more fuel in the crankcase! I contacted Moeller about the issue and they sent me a copy of the tag that comes on the tank. It specifically states that their 6 gallon portable tanks are not intended for permanent installation and they should be disconnected when not in use.
I run a Racor 120R on my mud motor and a 110A on one of my outboards. I have to respectfully disagree with BoatDr's comments on the quality of the paint jobs on aftermarket vs oem spin-on filters. I don't have any experience with Merc or Honda, but the paint job on my Yamaha spin-on housings are equally as "piss poor" as that of the Racors! They all suck in that regard.
